Although Richard received many ribbons and medals throughout his service as an Army Specialist during Operation Enduring Freedom, he returned home with many scars: post-traumatic stress, traumatic brain injury, depression, and anxiety.

A stray German shepherd mix named Charlie, with whom Pets for Vets® paired Richard, provided the calm and social temperament that Richard needed to begin healing.

Veteran Steve reached out to his local VA for help after years of sleepless nights.
The VA connected him with Pets for Vets®, and Steve was paired with Jimi Hendrix, a black, domestic shorthair cat. Jimi helped Steve calm down and prevented him from having night terrors. Jimi would also ride on Steve’s shoulder and would meow to make him aware if someone was approaching.
