Training Tip Tuesday – Teaching a Hand Target 🐾

A hand target is one of the easiest and most useful foundation behaviors you can teach your pet!

It simply means teaching them to gently touch your hand with their nose when asked.

Scarlet, a stray dog who had come into a shelter in California, smothered E-4 Tommanee “Red” McKinney with love and kisses upon first meeting her. Their Super Bond® formed instantly.

Tommanee, who suffered physical injuries while serving in the Air Force during the Gulf War, also suffered from dysthymia, persistent complex PTSD, and major depression.

Pets for Vets® matched Tommanee with Scarlet, treated Scarlet’s minor medical issue, trained her, and drove her to Utah, where she formed an instant connection with Tommanee, and helped her begin the healing process.

Although Richard received many ribbons and medals throughout his service as an Army Specialist during Operation Enduring Freedom, he returned home with many scars: post-traumatic stress, traumatic brain injury, depression, and anxiety.

A stray German shepherd mix named Charlie, with whom Pets for Vets® paired Richard, provided the calm and social temperament that Richard needed to begin healing.
