READ HIS STORY: My name is Ewan Griffioen. I was born in September 2010 in Johannesburg. I weighed 3.4 kg and I was a healthy and happy baby. But I’m different then all the other kids out there. In 2012, I was diagnosed with a genetic disorder called POMPE DISEASE.

What it means in my life is that my muscles are weak. I can’t walk and I’m not as strong as all my friends at school or even my younger sister. The disease has been picked up early enough so that it did not affect my heart or my lungs (as is the case in many other Pompe patients). I lack the acid alpha glucosidase enzyme (GAA) that helps break down the complex sugars (glycogen) that is in the lysosomes (tiny garbage collectors in the cells), into simple, easy to digest sugar (glucose) in the muscle. Therefore my muscles do not work as they should.

So what to do about the disease? There is no cure for it. There is however medicine on the market that is a replacement of the GAA enzyme that I lack. The medicine is administered via an IV drip every 14 days. The drip takes approximately 6 hours to administer. I’ve started with the medication a year ago. The process is slow but I’m getting stronger by the day.

I know that God will let things happen at exactly the right time. He has promised us that He will look after me (Jes 42:16) and He will keep all His promises (Ps 145:13). So for now I take this journey. I embrace life, just the way it is. And I do what we have to do, to get by, one day at a time.

Yogathon for Kat is tomorrow! Hope to see you at Empowered Yoga's new Glen Mills location. The event will run all day long - come for a little bit or for the whole day. Raffle for Kat winners will be chosen during the Grand Opening party that follows the Yogathon.

Kat-Dog Tees now available!
Strike a pose for a good cause – purchase a limited edition tee designed by Foundation 11 in honor of Kat Pusey. Women’s shirts are available in pink or grey in sizes S-XL. Men’s shirts are available in grey sizes M-XL. All proceeds from the sale of the shirts will help Kat Pusey defray medical expenses associated with her diagnosis of breast cancer.
