Neighbors to Nicaragua

Neighbors to Nicaragua Neighbors to Nicaragua alleviates problems resulting from severe poverty in Granada, Managua, and Ometepe through critical needs and education programming.

Neighbors to Nicaragua meets the critical needs of our youth and families by providing food, shelter, transportation, clothing, and medical aid and services. We also provide educational programming, supplies, and tuition support and aid the missions of other organizations whose effective work supports our own. Our vision began in April 2011 when Founder and Executive Director, Chuck Selvaggio, tra

veled to Granada, Nicaragua to study Spanish. After witnessing the region’s high rate of youth homelessness, Chuck became interested in learning more about efforts to educate its children and youth and alleviate issues associated with poverty. Upon returning home, he recruited friends, family members, and former colleagues to volunteer their time and money to support grassroots organizations working to improve the education and infrastructure of the communities he had visited. He guaranteed our first donors that 100% of their gifts would be allocated to academic and critical needs projects—a promise that remains to this day. Since then, we have established partnerships with various affiliates based in and around Managua, Granada, and Ometepe, Nicaragua. We received our 501(c)3 status in March 2013 and have continued to grow and diversify our programming and operations. We now offer a variety of educational and critical needs services to some 300 children, youth, and adults each year. Our primary projects and programs fall under at least one of the following categories: Education, Housing, Nutrition, Medical Aid, and Other Basic Needs. The work of Neighbors to Nicaragua would not be possible without our generous donors and volunteers. In addition to their fundraising and volunteer work in the United States, partners travel to Nicaragua regularly to offer a variety of educational, recreational, and healthcare-related services.

Late last month, our school held a combined Mothers’ Day and Children’s Day celebration with a day full of creativity, laughter, and community.

For weeks, the students worked after class in Isabel’s kitchen creating crafts and an amazing piñata for the event.

Teachers performed cultural dances, mothers joined relay races organized by the kids, and they also had fun competing against each other in their own races.

The students also presented a short drama honoring their mothers, while Isabel prepared a meal for 200 people.

Despite the heat, the day was filled with smiles, love, and unforgettable memories. We are grateful for this wonderful community and the joy they share together and with us!!

We are overflowing with gratitude as we celebrate an incredible achievement by Maddie Kuennen!

On May 9th, at the Ironman competition in Panama City, Maddie delivered an outstanding performance, finishing with a remarkable time of 4:54:47 and earning 9th place out of 47 competitors.

Her result has given her a strong chance to qualify for the World Championship competition - an amazing accomplishment that reflects her dedication, perseverance, and determination.

But Maddie’s impact extends far beyond the race course.

Through her efforts and commitment, she raised $4,205.00 to support the Garcia Family’s home construction project in Nicaragua.

Because of her hard work and the generosity of those who supported her journey, applications have now been submitted for groundbreaking and water connections, bringing this family one step closer to a safe and secure home.

Maddie, you are the definition of a win-win. You pursued excellence in your athletic goals while helping change the lives of others. Your heart for service, combined with your incredible athletic achievement, is an inspiration to all of us.

Congratulations, Maddie, and thank you for showing what it looks like to use your gifts to make a difference!

Great teaching doesn’t always come from outside trainings - it often starts with the people already in the room.

At Centro de Oportunidad, our principal, Mariam, has been bringing teachers together at the end of each month for something special: a chance to learn from one another.

During these sessions, teachers share what’s been working in their classrooms, swap ideas, and even jump into activities as if they were students themselves (which leads to lots of smiles and laughter)!

These gatherings have become a space for creativity, encouragement, and real, practical growth. When a new idea sparks, there’s a whole team ready to help bring it to life.

Sometimes the most powerful solutions are the simplest - and the closest to home.

Maddie Keunnen is trying to raise $3,000 to help the Garcia family in Nicaragua (Edwin, Rosa, and their two young children) build a safe, permanent home on land they’ve already purchased. She will be dedicating her training for the 2026 Ironman 70.3 Gulf Coast race to this mission, turning every workout into a step toward their future.

Every donation, no matter the size, makes an impact. And if you’re not able to give right now, please share and spread the word!

A huge THANK YOU to Maddie Kuennen for her efforts and we’re cheering you on in your training!

Every week, Isabel shows us what living your calling truly looks like. She’s the first to arrive at school and the last to leave, preparing and distributing around 140 meals with a heart full of love. ❤️

But her magic doesn’t stop there. Isabel also creates colorful piñatas, often teaming up with our students, sometimes turning her own kitchen into a workshop full of laughter and creativity.

And if that wasn’t enough, on her days off (or even after work), she carries a 5-gallon jug of juice and a piñata stuffed with treats deep into our barrio. News of her arrival spreads like wildfire - because who doesn’t love a surprise from Isabel?

Yesterday was International Women’s Day (shouldn’t it be every day??)

One of our teacher’s, Edmundo, organized a beautiful gesture to honor the women in his classroom.

Not only did he create this beautiful piece of art, he also helped another teacher create a similar display in her classroom, each with its own unique design.

What makes this even more meaningful is that this happened in a country where patriarchal traditions are still very present.

Seeing a teacher take the initiative to celebrate and uplift women in such a thoughtful way is truly inspiring.

We love our teachers and staff ❤️

Exciting things are happening at our school!

We’re thrilled to share that Mariam, our new principal, has revitalized our lending library with the introduction of “Library Day” - now held once a week for each teacher!

Each session includes 30 minutes in the classroom and 30 minutes in the library, and students and community members are welcome to stop by anytime.

Our amazing librarian, Marisela, brings stories to life with engaging read-alouds, followed by fun comprehension quizzes and creative activities.

This week’s highlight? Public speaking! Marisela set up a cardboard TV camera and microphone, and the students turned into reporters. They interviewed Chuck and then came up with thoughtful questions for our cook, Isabel, and our art teacher, Edmundo.

It was absolutely priceless watching their confidence shine!

We’re so proud of the creativity, curiosity, and joy filling our library each week.

Neighbors to Nicaragua is thrilled to welcome Mariangeles (Marian) to our team! A recent graduate in Educational Pedagogy, Marian joins us as our very first school principal - a milestone moment we’re proud to celebrate.

From day one, Marian has been making a meaningful impact by strengthening our registration, attendance, and discipline processes, building strong communication between teachers and administrators, and showing up every day to support and coach teachers, students, and parents.

Her leadership marks an exciting new chapter for our school, and we’re so happy to have her as part of the N-2-N family 💙📚

We honor the legacy of Matt Haley, whose life was profoundly changed through his work with those in need in Nepal. The Matt Haley Foundation has become a bedrock of encouragement and support for Neighbors to Nicaragua, and while Matt is no longer with us, his generosity continues to impact lives today.

Through the SoDel Concepts family of restaurants, his spirit of service lives on. We’re deeply honored to be a recipient of his foundation’s support and remain committed to carrying forward his passion for helping others.

SoDel’s coastal restaurants are a staple of Delaware beach life - the next time you’re in southern Delaware, please consider stopping in to one of their many restaurants to give back to the community who has given our community so much.

At Neighbors to Nicaragua, our work is rooted in one simple belief: when a community is supported with dignity, care, and education, lives can change.

Just steps away from our school lives Manuela, a 61-year-old grandmother who has devoted her life to caring for her physically challenged granddaughter, Kelly. For 19 years, Manuela has been Kelly’s constant - her advocate, her provider, her family. Living alone and carrying this responsibility, Manuela finds support through Neighbors to Nicaragua, receiving monthly groceries and additional care that help her continue providing for Kelly with strength and love.

Across the street from Manuela live two of our students, siblings Alondra and Miguel, whose lives reflect both the challenges and the hope within this community.

Miguel is a determined young boy who balances school with the responsibility of helping to support his family. After attending classes and receiving academic support at our center each afternoon, Miguel walks nearly seven kilometers to the beach with his mother and sisters to sell quesillo, a traditional cheese, until evening. Miguel faces learning challenges, particularly with reading, and has limited time for rest or study. Despite failing third grade, and losing access to public education, he continues to show up to our school every day. Our teacher Marvin works closely with Miguel both in the classroom and during extra support sessions, ensuring that education remains within his reach.

His sister Alondra’s journey shows what happens when opportunity meets perseverance. Living with her family in a modest tin home, Alondra arrived at our center with reading difficulties as well. With consistent support, encouragement, and her own dedication, she improved her academic skills, passed third grade with strong grades, and is now entering fourth grade with confidence. In recognition of her hard work, our school proudly rewarded her with a backpack and school supplies - small tools that carry big dreams.

These stories are not separate. They are connected by place, by people, and by purpose. Neighbors to Nicaragua is honored to walk alongside families like Manuela’s, Miguel’s, and Alondra’s - providing nourishment, education, and hope right in their own backyard, where our school resides. Together, we are building a stronger community, one family and one child at a time.
