Have you ever had trouble turning left onto Lancaster Avenue from Connell Street because you couldn’t see if traffic was coming because cars were parked up to the corners blocking your view?
The West Side Streets Committee for change, a group of residents, civic groups and community organizations, want to get a “daylighting” installation at this intersection to improve safety. Daylighting uses paint, posts, planters and curb design to keep vehicles from parking within 20 feet of intersections and crosswalks, areas where it is already illegal to park but the law is not consistently enforced.
We need to show that daylighting works to get the City and DelDOT to invest in a longer-term installation. So, on Friday, June 5th from 9-11 AM, volunteers and neighbors will use temporary street paint and flexible posts to mark out a daylighting buffer zone at the Lancaster/Connell intersection. The installation will be up all weekend and taken down Monday evening.
Stop by and check out how daylighting can make this intersection (or another intersection) safer and let us know what you think at our survey.
All are welcome to help set up the installation on Friday from 9-11AM. There will be a ribbon cutting at 11 AM to get press coverage for the demonstration. Then at 6 PM, there will be a community gathering. We will have water ice in the evening to help everyone keep cool.
Hope to see you there!
