UNCW Black History Month Lecture feat. Bree Newsome Bass
DATE: Monday, February 23, 2026.
LOCATION: UNCW Lumina Theater, Fisher Student Center.
TIME: 7:00 P.M. Doors open at 6:30 P.M.

BREE NEWSOME BASS. Community Organizer, Activist, and Contemporary Civil Rights Icon. This contemporary civil rights icon first garnered national attention for her daring act of peaceful disobedience in June 2015. Following the brutal murder of nine black parishioners at Mother Emmanuel Church in Charleston, S.C., Bree climbed the flagpole at the South Carolina statehouse and pulled down the Confederate Battle flag as a protest racist symbolism. Her arrest galvanized public opinion and led to the permanent removal of the flag. As a recognized and celebrated voice on the topics of injustice and racial discrimination, Bree brings light the importance of leadership development in building and sustaining social movements. Hosted by the Upperman African American Cultural Center.
TICKETS: Free for UNCW students, staff, faculty, and general admission

Rest in peace to Dr. Bertha Boykin Todd, a cherished educator, author, and civil rights leader who dedicated her life to strengthening the Wilmington community. Her commitment to uncovering and teaching the history of the 1898 massacre helped ensure that this painful chapter would no longer be overlooked or forgotten. Through her work with local organizations and her clear vision for equity, she encouraged residents to understand their shared history and strive for justice and unity. Her legacy of courage, service, and compassion will continue to inspire Wilmington for generations.

The Sankofa Graduation Reception is a time-honored tradition that recognizes the achievements of African and African American students as they prepare to embark on their next chapter. This meaningful celebration draws from the Akan symbol Sankofa, which reminds us to “go back and fetch it” — to look to our past as we move forward with purpose.
