Friends of Goodstay Gardens

Friends of Goodstay Gardens Goodstay is a historic Tudor-style garden located on the grounds of the University of Delaware's Goodstay Center at 2600 Pennsylvania Avenue in Wilmington.

Come visit! Friends of Goodstay Gardens was founded in 1993 to help restore, maintain, and celebrate historic Goodstay Gardens in Wilmington, Delaware. The Friends are an all-volunteer group proud to fund and administer the long and short-term care of this six-acre garden treasure on behalf of the University so the community can enjoy it free of charge. Goodstay Gardens is located on the grounds o

f the University of Delaware’s Wilmington Campus at 2700 Pennsylvania Avenue within easy walking distance of city neighborhoods. It is situated adjacent to the Goodstay mansion (now closed). The unassuming entry through an arched opening in the tall stone wall belies the pleasure garden that lies beyond, earning Goodstay the nickname, "Wilmington's Secret Garden". Historic Goodstay Gardens is one of the oldest gardens in the state and traces its legacy to the du Pont family like several other prominent gardens in the area: Gibraltar, Hagley, Nemours, Winterthur, Mt Cuba, & Longwood. Planted in the early 19th Century in the American Tudor style, the garden is partitioned into "rooms" with boxwood hedges bordering gravel paths. The property's most recent private owners were Ellen du Pont and her landscape architect husband, Robert Wheelwright. They restored and enhanced the gardens starting in the early 1920s, converting it from a kitchen garden to a pleasure garden with iris, rose, and peony "rooms". Friends of Goodsaty Gardens references this time period and the meticulous records kept by the Wheelwrights to guide design and planting decisions today. Upon her passing in 1968, Mrs. Wheelwright's family left the property to the University of Delaware. Friends of Goodstay Gardens is proud to fully fund and administer the care Goodstay Gardens and it's outbuildings with the support of our loyal donors and volunteers.

Genius loci is Latin for “spirit of place,” the essence of a location that nourishes the inner self. Ancient Romans believed that genius loci embraced a guardian spirit, one of their gods.

Goodstay Gardens has its own guardian spirit, embodied in the sculpture, the Kneeling Girl, created by William Zorach. Come, wander among the flowers, the trees and other features and discover the special feeling she gives to us.

The rose garden at Goodstay has been thoughtfully restored to its original design.

The first stage of the project introduced steel-edged beds to improve watering, while the second created grassy paths between them. These walkways invite guests to wander among the roses, taking in their fragrance when in their glory. The restoration has been overseen by landscape designer Eduardo Limon.

The Rose Garden is one of the largest spaces in Goodstay Gardens devoted to a single plant species. It is also the most ambitious restoration project now in progress.

The first phase prepares the site for a contractor to install steel edging and reestablish the original layout. To restore the historic bed lines created by Robert Wheelwright in 1924.

Reshaping the planting beds improves irrigation and creates a pleasing balance with the grassy paths between the roses. Every detail has been carefully planned to revive the historic design while adapting to existing conditions.

Landscape designer Eduardo Limon is leading the restoration in partnership with The Friends of Goodstay Gardens.

Goodstay Gardens has secluded corners, such as this, where a weathered bench is backed by a dry-stone wall that seems to embrace a patient tree. Removed from the noise of the world, a space that offers no answers, only stillness.

Trees and Stone Walls

About 100 years ago, Goodstay Gardens was a farm that supplied fresh produce to the Marian Coffin Gardens at Gibraltar. The stone wall shown in the photos was built during that time.

Over the years, tree roots have pushed and shifted parts of the wall, so some rebuilding is now underway. The wall is designed to look like dry stone masonry, with little or no visible mortar. For added strength, however, a small amount of mortar is used on the inside. Though no match for a sturdy tree.
