Today, we recognize Indigenous Peoples' Day, a time to honor the histories, cultures, traditions, and contributions of Indigenous peoples across the country.

It's also an opportunity to recognize that Indigenous communities are not just part of our history. They are an important part of our present and future.

Take some time today to learn about Indigenous cultures, listen to Indigenous voices, and reflect on the importance of preserving traditions and honoring the communities who have called this land home for generations.

Got a gift exchange activity coming up this holiday season, like a Yankee swap or white elephant?

Think about avoiding alcoholic gifts, since you don’t know if the person who gets the gift might be in recovery or avoiding alcohol for other reasons.

Make it fun with a gift for all like an ornament, a hot chocolate kit, or a set of cooking spices.

The words we use can make a difference in whether someone feels judged or supported.

Stigma around substance use and mental health can create barriers to getting help. Using respectful, person-first language is one simple way we can help change that.

Instead of labels, we can choose words that recognize the person first.

Our words matter because people matter.

Peer pressure can be tough, but having a plan can help young people feel more confident when they find themselves in an uncomfortable situation.

Parents and caregivers can help by talking through situations before they happen. Practice different ways to say no, discuss how to leave a situation involving alcohol or other drugs, and make sure your child knows they can always call or text you for help.

These conversations don't have to be complicated. Helping young people think ahead gives them tools they can use when they need them.

Prevention happens everywhere young people live, learn and grow.

Families play an important role, but they don't have to do it alone. Teachers, coaches, schools, community organizations and other caring adults can all help young people feel supported, connected and prepared to make healthy choices.

When young people hear consistent messages and know there are adults they can turn to, we help create communities where they can thrive.

We all have a role to play in prevention.

What triggers your urge to use to***co?

Write your triggers down and think about the best way to handle each of them. Strategies can be simple, such as avoiding certain situations, having gum or hard candy with you, substituting a hot tea or chewing on ice, or taking several deep breaths.

Delaying is another tactic. As you’re preparing to quit smoking, va**ng or using other to***co, think about when you usually have your first smoke, chew or v**e of the day and try to delay that for as long as you can. Even delaying by a short amount of time, and lengthening that every day up to your quit date, can reduce cravings. For tips and ideas on how to deal with these triggers, check out https://802quits.org/staying-to***co-free/

Whether this is your first attempt or you’ve quit many times before, staying to***co-free is the final, most important, and often the hardest part of your process. Keep reminding yourself of all the reasons you chose to quit to***co. Know that slips can happen, and that doesn’t mean you have to ...
