Rep. Becca Balint met with resettled families at ECDC's Multicultural Center in Brattleboro on Monday.
Here, she's talking to John and Yordanos, who recently resettled in the Deerfield Valley with their two daughters.

“We have sham hearings about issues related to the border, and we’re not doing the hard work of really passing comprehensive immigration, migration and asylum policy,” U.S. Rep. Becca Balint said Monday in a home-state meeting on the issue.

Deerfield Valley New Neighbors is seeking more core team members! Core Team members play a leadership role in one of six areas of resettlement: Housing & Welcome, Employment & Finance, Education, Transportation, Cultural Orientation, and Health. We're also seeking Core Team members who can fill additional roles. Because Core Team members have closer contact with the family on a regular basis, membership on the core team requires training (by video) followed by a short quiz, and a simple background records check by ECDC. If you think you'd like to be part of the core team, please contact us at [email protected] or use the "send message" button below to contact us on Facebook.

As many of you know, the first family to be resettled in the Deerfield Valley arrived on on January 24, a family of four originally from Eritrea. The couple and their two daughters are settling into their new home, furnished and stocked with food all donated by the community, Their days so far have been filled with appointments in Brattleboro and the Deerfield Valley. Our volunteers have been busy providing transportation and connecting the family with other resources.

Coming from a very warm part of the world to the U.S. in January, the Vermont winter snow and temperatures were a surprise and a challenge at first, but thanks to donations and support from so many members and local organizations, they're now better prepared for our northern climate.

The family has expressed their gratitude for the donations and the warm welcome they've received since arriving in Vermont, and have told us they feel fortunate to have come to a place like Vermont, where people care about their new neighbors. They're eager to become part of the community, begin their employment in the valley, and have already enrolled their oldest child in preschool - something she's very excited about!
Although English is already one of the languages spoken in the household, their next few weeks will include ESL and cultural orientation classes.
