How the city treats its most vulnerable is a reflection upon all of us. Fairness in water billing matters--- that's why we're fighting to get the city to change its practices on water shutoffs for vulnerable families.

Revenue from property taxes is essential to the City of Wilmington. When revenue is low, the city makes it up through increases to things like water bills, parking tickets, and fines and fees. Without accurate property assessment values, Wilmington could be leaving money on the table. We need everyone to pay their fair share in taxes--- including commercial property owners. Show up at city council and tell them to make sure assessment values are accurate! HOMES Campaign

“If Wilmington begins voiding people’s unpaid parking tickets when they take their cars, that will make this practice more constitutional, but it won’t make it fair,” said Shyanne Miller, a coordinator of the HOMES Campaign in a news release Tuesday from the Wilmington Fines and Fees Justice Team. “Cars are how people get to work, to grocery stores, to school. When you take someone’s car, you take their livelihood.”

An ordinance before Wilmington City Council would jump-start changes to ticketing and towing as part of a lawsuit settlement agreement.
