A WWII icon. A statewide rescue effort. A legacy still being restored for future generations.

The USS NORTH CAROLINA Battleship is a living memorial to the 9,000 crew members who served aboard, the 11,000 North Carolinians who never returned from World War II and the children across all 100 counties who helped save the ship from the scrapyard in 1961. Now, as the Battleship looks ahead to its 90th year, ongoing preservation work, educational programs and its upcoming “Berth-day” celebration continue to honor the past while preparing the ship for the future.

“We came together as a nation to win World War II; then we came together in 1961 as a state to save the ship and achieve something special,” says Executive Director Dr. Jay Martin.
