Once a bustling Atlantic Coast Line Railroad stop in the early 1900s, the Lake Waccamaw Train Depot stood silent after being abandoned in 1974. Thanks to a determined group of local women, this historic landmark was saved, restored, and brought back to life.
Local volunteers poured their hearts into preserving the depot, protecting a piece of Lake Waccamaw’s identity. Their work transformed a forgotten building into a vibrant museum.
Today, the depot is filled with exhibits celebrating the region’s railroad heritage and the stories that shaped the community.
Long before trains arrived, mosasaurs swam in the waters here 68 million years ago. Fossils and educational displays help visitors imagine the prehistoric world beneath Lake Waccamaw.
The Waccamaw Siouan Tribe still calls this region home. Historic Indian canoes found in the lake offer a powerful connection to the people who lived here long before railroads.
The Lake Waccamaw Train Depot Museum is open Wednesday–Saturday, 10am–3pm, and admission is free.
