Abigail Holloman of Hampstead was one of six Sea Scouts in the United States to sail on the Coast Guard Eagle last summer — and the adventure continues.

The Cape Fear Council is home to Ship 2003. Founded in 2021, Ship 2003 began with the minimum requirement of five youth—three of whom were new to Scouting—and five adult leaders. Since then, the crew has ranged in size from five to fourteen members and currently includes ten active scouts.

Sea Scouts focus on learning through experiences on the water. Unlike traditional Scout troops, Sea Scouts practice nautical skills and can earn certifications in areas like boating safety, lifesaving, and CPR. Ship 2003 benefits from a partnership with the U.S. Coast Guard Auxiliary Flotilla 054-10-06 in Wilmington, which chartered the unit and provides training in navigation, first aid, and participation in safety patrols.

Leadership is a major part of the Sea Scout program. Ship 2003 is largely youth-led, with the scouts electing their own leaders, planning activities, and teaching essential skills to newer members. While adult leaders are there to ensure safety and provide guidance, scouts learn by doing—even if that means learning from mistakes.

The program helps build confidence, responsibility, and resilience. These are skills the scouts carry with them long after they leave the program. In fact, one Ship 2003 member has gone on to join the Navy, and another, Abbey Holloman from Hampstead, North Carolina, was recently elected as the Sea Scouts’ National Boatswain for the 2025–2026 term—the top youth leadership position in the national program.

Beyond the leadership and skill-building, Ship 2003 knows how to have fun. The crew enjoys sailing, fishing, paddling, kayaking, and campouts. They often take their small sailboat out to Lake Sutton for day trips and participate in regional and national Sea Scout events. Ship 2003 offers young people a unique opportunity to grow, lead, and explore—both on the water and beyond.
