💜 Community partners came together in a big way at the Columbus County Community Disaster Preparedness Expo, one of the most well-attended preparedness expos in years!

The Catholic Charities Cape Fear Region was honored to collaborate with 17 community partners, helping connect families with disaster preparedness, response, and recovery resources. We’re especially proud of our Disaster Specialist, Vickie Sasser, who serves as Chair of the Columbus County Disaster Coalition and helped pull this event together.

Participants visited vendor booths, learned about local support services, and discovered practical ways to prepare before disaster strikes. Catholic Charities also distributed food boxes, including a “No Cook Cookbook” and ingredients for nutritious meals that can be prepared without electricity.

We are grateful to every volunteer, partner, and community member who helped make this event such a success.
Now is the time to get prepared. Build your emergency kit, create a family plan, and learn what resources are available in your community before disaster strikes.

Our regional office was proud to take part in this hands-on disaster training as Catholic Charities prepares for the upcoming hurricane season. Taking time to practice now helps us better serve our neighbors when storms 🌧️🌧️🌧️ impact the Cape Fear area.

This weekend, Catholic Charities was proud to participate in the New Hanover Disaster Coalition Disaster Preparedness Expo alongside so many partners organizations working to help our community stay safe and resilient.

Our Disaster Services team had the opportunity to speak with families about practical ways to prepare before a storm and share how Catholic Charities supports individuals and communities during disaster recovery. We also brought our mobile laundry trailer for a hands-on “show and tell,” giving attendees a look at one of the many ways we can serve disaster survivors after a storm impacts a community.

Events like this are an important reminder that preparedness starts long before a disaster arrives. Taking time now to make a plan, build an emergency kit, and stay informed can make a major difference when severe weather strikes.

Thank you to the New Hanover Disaster Coalition for hosting this valuable event and helping strengthen our community before, during, and after disasters.

These meaningful moment are only possible because of the compassion and commitment of our neighbors.

Last Wednesday, on April 22nd, our office hosted a celebratory lunch to honor our volunteers. We shared a meal, made puns, played trivia, and handed our treat bags to all volunteers in attendance.

Lane Abernathy, our Food Delivery Program Manager, said it best in his welcome speech to the volunteers:

“Your value goes far beyond anything we could express in words or deeds. You are essential to everything that we accomplish. Today we say thank you, not only for what you do but for who you are. Thank you for your willingness to serve with us. The world is a better place because of you!”

Our volunteers are invited as well! Join us if you can!
