The Delaware Black Chamber of Commerce® is proud to celebrate and support the legacy of the August Quarterly Festival—one of the nation’s oldest and most significant African American cultural and religious traditions.

Founded more than 200 years ago through the vision of Rev. Peter Spencer and the historic Mother African Union Church, August Quarterly has long served as a gathering place for faith, culture, fellowship, entrepreneurship, and community.

This year’s celebration carries even deeper meaning following the devastating fire that destroyed the historic Mother African Union Church in May. While the physical structure may be gone, its legacy, history, and impact on generations of African Americans remain strong.

The story of August Quarterly has always been one of perseverance, faith, and resilience—and that spirit continues today.

We extend our sincere appreciation to Reverend Dr. Whitaker for including the Delaware Black Chamber of Commerce® in the CBS Philadelphia special highlighting the history, legacy, and enduring impact of August Quarterly. Thank you for helping preserve and share this important story with a broader audience.

Last year, our President & CEO, Ayanna Khan-Flowers, was honored during this historic celebration, making the occasion especially meaningful for our organization. As we look ahead to August Quarterly 2026, we do so with gratitude, reflection, and a renewed commitment to honoring the legacy of those who built and sustained this tradition for more than two centuries.

We look forward to gathering once again to celebrate the strength of our community and the enduring legacy of August Quarterly.

Happy Juneteenth from the Delaware Black Chamber of Commerce!

Today, we honor June 19, 1865—a day that symbolizes freedom, resilience, and the enduring pursuit of opportunity. Juneteenth is a celebration of Black history, culture, achievement, and the generations who fought for a brighter future.

As we reflect on the past, we also celebrate the progress made and recommit ourselves to empowering Black and Brown-owned businesses, strengthening communities, and creating pathways to prosperity for generations to come.

At DEBCC, we believe that economic empowerment is a powerful form of legacy. Together, we continue to build, uplift, and create opportunities that honor those who came before us.

Honoring our past. Celebrating our present. Building our future. Happy Juneteenth!❤️💛💚

Today, the House Labor Committee considered SB 272, legislation that raises serious concerns for Delaware’s small, minority-owned, and independent contractors.

The Delaware Black Chamber of Commerce opposed this bill because of the potential impact it could have on small businesses that are already working to navigate rising costs, workforce challenges, and barriers to growth. We believe legislation affecting Delaware’s business community should create opportunities for all businesses to compete and succeed—not create additional obstacles for small and minority-owned firms.

During today’s hearing, comments were made suggesting that minority contractors are not needed in the industry. Regardless of where individuals stand on SB 272, statements like these serve as a reminder of why representation matters and why Black-owned businesses and minority contractors must continue to have a voice in legislative discussions that directly affect their livelihoods.

Although SB 272 fell one vote short of being released from committee, the bill’s sponsor indicated that efforts will continue to secure additional support. The Delaware Black Chamber of Commerce will continue to monitor the legislation and advocate for policies that support economic opportunity, inclusion, and the growth of Delaware’s small business community.

We also want to extend a special thank you to William Holley, owner of Dependable Construction of Delaware, for taking the time to testify and ensure that the perspectives of small and minority-owned contractors were represented during today’s hearing. Advocacy matters, and we appreciate William’s leadership, engagement, and commitment to standing up for Delaware’s business community.
