CHILD, Inc.’s Helping Children Heal program serves children ages 4–18 exposed to intimate partner violence, along with their caregivers. Helping children heal is part of helping families heal.

Tomorrow, October 10, is World Homeless Day and World Mental Health Day. Both days speak to the work of One Big House, where Friendship House & Limen Recovery and Wellness serve Delaware neighbors together.

At Friendship House, we use two words with care: Houselessness and homelessness

Houselessness is the loss of a physical place to live.

Homelessness is the loss of community and connection.

Houselessness and homelessness can happen to anyone. So can a mental health struggle, and each one tends to make the others harder.

That is why our work covers both: helping people find and keep stable housing, and providing a community of support with people who know them by name.

We’re grateful to everyone in this community who helps a neighbor find a place to live and people to lean on.

As part of Domestic Violence Awareness Month, the Hennepin County Attorney’s Office is hosting a Domestic Violence Resource Fair, bringing together community organizations to share valuable resources and support services for individuals and families impacted by domestic violence.

Attendees will have the opportunity to connect with local service providers and learn about available programs and resources.

Did you know Delaware is the first state to allow non-attorneys to represent tenants facing eviction?

In a recent feature, WHYY News highlights Delaware’s innovative Qualified Tenant Advocate program and how it is helping low-income families navigate the eviction process and avoid homelessness.

As CLASI Qualified Tenant Advocate Rena Scott and Deputy Director Sarah Rhine explain in the story, specially trained advocates at Delaware’s three legal aid agencies work closely with families to help them understand their rights, identify the issues at the heart of their housing challenges, and find solutions that can help them remain housed.

Before a 2022 rule change made this possible, landlords could be represented by non-attorneys in eviction proceedings, while tenants could not. The result was a significant imbalance: 86% of landlords had some form of representation, compared with just 2% of tenants.

Today, the Qualified Tenant Advocate program, alongside Delaware’s Right to Representation law enacted in 2023, is expanding access to legal assistance for families facing eviction across the state.

The legal aid agencies worked with 1,726 households last year, reaching a positive outcome in over 80% of closed cases including 792 evictions avoided.

October is Domestic Violence Awareness Month, when we reaffirm our commitment to working with partners across Delaware to prevent and end domestic violence by ensuring that survivors can access the legal assistance and other resources they need to achieve safety and independence.

We're proud to work alongside partners including the Delaware Coalition Against Domestic Violence, CHILD, Inc., People's Place, Inc., Delaware Volunteer Legal Services, Legal Services Corp. of Delaware, and YWCA Delaware to support and advocate for survivors statewide.
