Mental health awareness doesn’t end in May. Heading into June, Cover My Mental Health and the American Psychiatric Association are highlighting an important reality: awareness must be matched by access to care.

The numbers tell a clear story — mental health treatment saves lives and reduces long-term costs. Yet too many people still face denied claims, inadequate provider networks, and delayed treatment because of insurance obstacles.

Everyone deserves timely access to appropriate mental health care. Cover My Mental Health provides free resources to help patients, families, and clinicians overcome insurance barriers and access the care they paid for.

At Cover My Mental Health, we believe people shouldn’t have to wait for change to get the health care coverage they already paid for.

In our new “Supporter Spotlight” series, our board member Dr. Eric Plakun — psychiatrist and former CEO/Medical Director of Austen Riggs Center — shares why he supports CMMH’s mission.

Too often, insurers define success in mental health care as simply “crisis stabilization.” But real treatment is about recovery: helping people build the capacity to live self-directed, meaningful lives.

Long-term reform may require legislation — but patients, families, and clinicians need support NOW. That’s where CMMH comes in.

🎥 Watch Dr. Plakun share why access to mental health care can’t wait.

When dealing with insurance companies, it’s simply good practice to document everything.

Dates, names, reference numbers, and exactly what was said.

Too often, patients hear: “We have no record of that conversation.” Your notes can make all the difference.

We’re excited to join .san.diego for an upcoming virtual Family Voice event on May 21 at 1 PM PT.

Our founder and president, Joe Feldman, will be speaking about one of the biggest barriers families face when trying to access mental health care: insurance obstacles.

We’ll cover:
• “Not medically necessary” denials
• Lack of suitable in-network providers
• Navigating confusing insurance processes
• Tips for communicating with insurers and pushing back effectively

Whether you’re supporting a loved one or navigating these challenges yourself, we hope this conversation leaves you with practical tools, encouragement, and a clearer path forward.

There will also be time for open Q&A. We’d love to see you there. Register at link in bio!
