Tree Mulching Tips!

Mulch is extremely beneficial for trees but it should be spread under trees in a donut shape, not piled against the trunk in a volcano shape.

Mulch should NEVER touch the tree trunk as it leads to damage, disease, and even the eventual death of the tree.

Please check your trees to make sure they are properly mulched. If you see mulch touching the trunk, pull it away and, most importantly, contact your yard service, if you have one, and complain. Many companies mulch incorrectly and they need to hear from you!

Also check for weed-wacker damage to the tree trunk. These small nicks can weaken or eventually kill the tree. Never plant grass that needs trimming next to the trunk.

Conserve Water During Storms!

Recent heavy rains are likely to continue as a part of our weather pattern in the future. The Metropolitan Water Reclamation District notes that rainwater in our area mostly drains through the same sets of pipes as your water at home does. When too much water tries to enter that system all at once, sewers back up into streets and basements and can even overflow into rivers.

At these times, every small action you take at home can help. During storms, delay your shower, don't run dishwashers or wash clothes. Replace old or leaky faucets, showerheads and toilets with water efficient ones.

The MWRD has an action alert system that reminds you to take these actions when heavy rain is forecast.

Catwalk for Clean Water!

Wednesday, May 6th, 6:00-8:00pm
2828 North Clark St. Chicago

Aveda Institute students have taken sustainable fashion to new heights by creating stunning looks from recycled materials. They scour junkyards and collection bins for unique objects to incorporate into their designs, resulting in a fashion experience like no other. These ensembles are judged by industry professionals.

Audience members can enjoy the show, interact with the pieces, and receive services from Institute students. All proceeds from ticket sales support Alliance for the Great Lakes & the Clean Lakes Alliance, two organizations who advocate for keeping our lakes clean and safe.

Happy Earth Day!

Communities around the world will celebrate Earth Day today. Earth Day began in 1970, a year that temperature data show was colder than average for the 20th century. As you might guess, though, 1970 was one of the last years when this was true. Since the late 1990s, no year has been colder than that average, and the average yearly temperature has been rising pretty steadily. The U.S.'s hottest years on record were the last two years: 2024 and 2023.

This Earth Day, we should celebrate the Earth as always, but we must also resolve to do everything we can to limit climate change and its consequences. Private actions can have impacts.

This April, start composting, sign up for community solar, drive less, buy less and eat locally grown foods when you can. Pulling together is the only way we can slow the runaway temperature increases on our horizon
