Scout Troop 5 Wilmette

Scout Troop 5 Wilmette Troop 5 have served the community of Wilmette, IL since 1922. We are chartered by the First Presbyterian Church of Wilmette.

We are very proud to be the home of over 300 Eagle Scouts. As one of the oldest Troops in Illinois, Troop 5 has been proudly chartered by First Presbyterian Church in Wilmette since 1922. During the school year, we regularly meet on most Mondays at 7:30pm-8:45p. At camp or have a weather appropriate outing every month. During the summers, we spend at Camp Makajawan in Pearson, WI. In addition to r

egular Boy Scout Troop, we have a high-adventure, co-ed focused High School Venturing Crew. While still active within the Troop, the Crew allows some of our more experienced and older Scouts to try more challenging experiences like backpacking at Philmont Scout Reservation, back country trekking in Yellowstone National Park, enjoying canoeing the unspoiled Boundary Waters, cycling/camping across the Midwest or enjoying tropical adventures at Sea Base in Southern, Florida.

This weekend’s advancement campout was a huge success! Our scouts earned their Totin’ Chip and Firem’n Chit, learning essential skills in knife, axe, saw, and fire safety. But the learning didn’t stop there. They also took time to explore the outdoors—discovering a hidden stream, swinging on a vine like adventurers, and enjoying nature together.

We hiked five miles through beautiful woods and stumbled across a historic surprise—“Site A,” the location of the world’s first nuclear reactor, tucked away in the forest. The day ended with a classic Troop 5 campfire, complete with songs and stories shared late into the night. A great weekend of growth, discovery, and fun!

Shawnee Mini Trek Recap!

Our crew of 9 scouts and 5 adults just returned from an incredible adventure in Shawnee National Forest! After a 6-hour drive, we arrived at the cabin, our base camp for the trek. Scouts worked together to set up camp, prepare meals, and check gear, ensuring everyone carried the right amount of weight for the trail—a true team effort!

We hit the trail in the rain, but by lunchtime at One Horse Gap, the skies cleared, and we pressed on. Our first night’s camp was perched on the edge of a bluff, overlooking breathtaking forests and rock formations. The next day, we trekked 6 miles through forests, hills, and streams, pushing through to a stunning lakeside campsite at One Horse Gap Lake.

On the final day, we tackled a steep climb out of the valley, then returned to Mr. Lewis’ cabin for conservation work—repairing overgrown trails and giving back to the land that gave us such an amazing experience.

A huge shoutout to our scouts for their teamwork and perseverance! Already looking forward to next year’s adventure!
