Welcome to Northern Pine Riders (NPR) Snowmobile Club
Willow River, Minnesota

We’re a dedicated group of volunteers that develop, groom and maintain snowmobile and ATV trails. On December 27, 1970, a group of snowmobile enthusiasts from northern Pine County establish

ed a snowmobile club originally named “Sno Slobs” with a name change to Northern Pine Riders in the fall of 1973. Trails were established as funds and volunteer time allowed. In 1973 the MN Legislature established the Snowmobile Trail Grants-in-Aid Program to help MN snowmobile clubs with funding to establish and maintain trails. With that program’s help, NPR has expanded its trail mileage to 156. The trails connect the cities of Willow River, Denham, Rutledge, Sandstone, Finlayson, Askov and Kerrick. The system also connects to the Duxbury, Nickerson, Duquette, Nemadji and Gen CC Andrews State Forest areas. NPR’s trails connect to MN State Trails, Moose Horn Rod and Gun Club Trails, Giese Sno Crusiers Trails creating a system of over 400 groomed trail miles. In the early 1990’s land was purchased at 3008 Co Rd 43 (1/4 mi west of the I-35 exit) in Willow River and a shop with a meeting room was erected. An additional storage building was added in 1996 and heated storage in 2007. The trails are groomed weekly with a John Deere 6430 and Trailmaster drag. As conditions permit grooming is also accomplished with a Bombardier BR 180 and Trailmaster drag. We are members of Minnesota United Snowmobilers Association (MnUSA), the only statewide organization. Your NPR annual membership includes membership in MnUSA and a subscription to MN Snowmobiling Magazine. MnUSA is the snowmobilers’ voice at the State Legislature with its full-time lobbyist, and with the DNR. We have developed an Adopt-a-Trail program whereby members group together to maintain selected sections of our trail system. Club-wide workdays are scheduled to accomplish major trail projects. We are always looking for new members. Some of the activities we enjoy are club snowmobile rides, Landowner/Volunteers Appreciation Day, spring clean-up day, fall trail workdays, and a float in the Willow River Days parade. Contact any club member for more information. Check out the CURRENT EVENTS page for upcoming meeting dates and times, other fun activities, and volunteer opportunities. We meet the second Friday of the month at 7:00pm at our club building in Willow River located ¼ mile west of the I-35 and Pine County Hwy 43 junction. See you there!!

Summer for the club is also very busy. Yesterday team groomed the Soo Line South, ~13 miles we maintain in Pine County and also General Andrews trails by Sturgeon Lake. Drag is a converted snow unit that our team has modified to massage the gravel and sand. Baby bottom smooth after we were done.

First pass of the season was with Road Grader. This pass we used our JD 6430 Tractor. Plans are to groom the Soo Line and General Andrews at least once a month for the summer.

Huge thanks to Randy Sjoberg, our Co-Trail Coordinator, for taking the lead to get this done.

Last Friday night we hosted an appreciation dinner for our groomer operators and their significant others. Last year we were able to groom eight weeks even with a limited snow. That does not include the weeks prior to the snow where we go out and pack the trails and remove brush getting ready for the snow. Last winter we groomed over 2000 miles, maintaining our 157 miles of trails. We have 10 trained and qualified operators running our two groomers. The larger is the 6430 John Deere and the smaller of a Favero rabbit.

Summer is here, and since we’re a snowmobile club, we just rest all summer and wait for winter…..NOT. Summer for us is often even busier than the winter. Tonight was the first of our work nights that will last all summer long. Tonight‘s focus was cleaning up equipment, getting salt and grime off. Other projects include new bridges, trail work, maintenance on equipment, and ATV trail work as some of our charter also supports wheelers.

Just want to reach out to everyone and let them know that we’ve closed their gates on the northern Pine rider system. Probably no surprise. Thanks to everyone for their support during the season and riding our trails were able.. Off-season for us is busy as we continue to do trail improvements that include brushing, grading, and bridgework. Hopefully we’ll have a great season next winter. Thank you all.

Trail Update 19March2026: Few of us had a ride yesterday on mostly Northern Pine Trails logging about 130 miles. Was a great day, but by early afternoon trails were degrading fast. With the warm weather forecast they will continue to degrade fast. Ride at your own risk, and please be careful.
