The Lower Trinity River PBA is a network of landowner, community members, local fire departments, and other interested people who are working to use prescribed fire as an effective management tool. Prescribed burning is used to reduce unhealthy vegetation buildup, decrease wildfire risk and in many cases, renew landscapes and encourage native plant growth.

Breaking down barriers to a healthier California!

CAL FIRE, through the Prescribed Fire Liability Fund, is supporting prescribed fire and cultural burning practitioners by providing liability coverage for approved projects staffed by a qualified burn boss or cultural burn practitioner. Prescribed fire and cultural burns have been done for generations to benefit both the land and people by restoring adaptive ecosystems, creating healthy and resilient landscapes, and increasing water quality.

Another significant milestone to report! Our organization has been consistently working toward creating wildfire resilient communities here in east county Humboldt and western Trinity county since our inception in early 2022. Through close collaboration with and support from our partners at Six Rivers Forest and CalFire, the Lower Trinity Prescribed Burn Association has submitted over 38,000 acres of Community Wildfire Protection Plan polygon expansions to Humboldt County so far in 2024. We are proud and honored to serve in this capacity, making way for future funding opportunities within an evolved perspective on what a Wildland Urban Interface can be defined as.

Good Fire Symposium 2024

πŸ”₯ 1st Annual Good Fire Symposium πŸ”₯

April 20th & 21st, 2024

The Lower Trinity Prescribed Burn Association is excited to be hosting the first annual Good Fire Symposium on April 20th and 21st, 2024, in Willow Creek at our 111 Mayfair Street Headquarters, and Beebe Ranch.

This event is a significant step forward in our collective efforts to promote sustainable land management and wildfire prevention practices.

The symposium will focus on the use of prescribed fire, with an emphasis on integrating traditional indigenous fire practices. We are honored to have Margo Robbins, Executive Director of the Cultural Fire Management Council and Yurok Tribal Member, and Alice Lincoln-Cook, Executive Director and Chair of the California Indian Basketweavers Association and Karuk Tribal Member, as our featured speakers. Their expertise and perspectives are invaluable to our discussions on native-led approaches to fire management. Rounding out the speaker series will be Cleo Woelfle-Hazard and Henri Holbrook from UC Cooperative Extensions Fire Advisor program.

April 21st, weather permitting on the day following the symposium, we will hold a Field Day at the historic Beebe Ranch, owned by Yurok Tribal Member Debb Beebe. Participants will have the opportunity to engage in understory burning of 10 acres (pre-treated by Adaptive Forestry Solutions through the Humboldt FLASH program in 2022), applying the concepts discussed during the symposium in a practical setting. Additionally, a holding and hand crew of Wailaki Tribal Members will also be present in supportive capacity on both days.

Lower Trinity PBA is committed to making this event inclusive and accessible to all, reflective of our dedication to full spectrum community engagement. The symposium is free to attend, and we encourage participation from all interested parties. Ample amounts of PPE and hand tools will be available with generous support from our Humboldt County Prescribed Burn Association partners.

The Symposium represents an important opportunity for collaboration and understanding between diverse groups, addressing historical challenges and reticence in the region while continuing to promote a unified approach to fire management.
We'd be honored if you could join us for this landmark event. For more information or to register your participation, please contact Community Coordinator Blaze Shannon at [email protected].

How Related is a Wildfire Year to the Preceding Water Year?
Does a Water Year effect the coinciding fire season? Let's take a closer look at the sheer numbers of fires and acreage burned as an anchor point. Here is a year by year infographic series.
The color code indicates how "good" or "bad" that Water Year was for each basin. Red indicates a very low precipitation total for that year, yellow is slightly better, green is average/healthy, and blue and dark blue being above average or far above average precipitation years, with percentages in each.
These are big numbers to contemplate. Over the last decade, anywhere from 50,000 to 71,000 wildfires were reported west of the Rockies. In that same window, an average of 2,500,000 acres to 10,100,000 acres burned. How do these numbers align with water years? For instance, following a horrible water year in 2014, 63,000 fire starts yielded 3.5 Million Acres of burned area. Conversely, following a modest water year in 2020, 68,000 fire starts yielded 10.1 Million Acres of burned area. The question then becomes WHERE in order to get closer to the corollary WHY.
For a follow-up exercise, an overlay of each year's wildfire perimeters is necessary, to see which watershed basin burned the most acreage in a given year. We'd also break it down further into Regions of National Fire Response. For now, this is a good place to start.
