Hi friends!! Just an invitation to follow Kankunapa, our Art, Culture and Wellness branch, it's name means “for everyone”, not because we are giving something to the community from an ownership perspective, but because Kankunapa belongs to the community, in a more native approach.
It is a shared space that people can participate in, contribute to, and help shape through arts, culture, movement, sound, spirituality, and collective wellness.

Yesterday we hosted a dream come true event. In our new space called “Kankunapa” we gathered people to share the finished Ceiba tree project, engage in a variety of self-care practices, eat a range of multicultural foods from local restaurants, and introduce people to the space. We are filled with excitement and gratitude to listen to the community’s response to the place. We have been careful to listen to the needs, wants, and dreams of our community, especially to those who often don’t get their voices heard. Thank you kindly to everyone who showed up and brought your presence, it was felt. Thank you to Libbie with Spacious Place Creative for co-creating the event with us.
This is collective wellness. We all belong to this.

From the SMAC June 2026 Newsletter: Recently, SMAC Board & Staff have strived to visit more SMAC grant-funded events to connect with grantees. In May, a member of SMAC staff attended The Willmar Project in Willmar, MN. Purpose Artisans received a grant to work with the Neighborhood Theatre Project to produce a community-based verbatim theatre initiative, which blended community members' answers to the question, "What is it like for you living in Willmar?" into a play. Performances included staged readings of the play, community dialogue, and shared meals. Pictured here is community drumming that took place outside the venue before the one of the performances. What a meaningful and thoughtful project to bring community together though understanding and the arts!
