With an hour to go, more and more teams are arriving at the Finish Line with several still out on the final trek. Here's to warm food, dry clothes, and the magnificent cacophony of storytelling that comes at the end of every race.

08/18/2024

Just about 2 hours to go and here is the current weather at The Hard Fall. Spare a thought for the tired, cold, hungry teams as they pass through the TA9/Finish to head out on the final trek.

For the Dotwatchers:

As we enter the final hours of the race, please continue to recognize that the trackers and current scores are unofficial. As with any AR race, race officials will have to sort through course adjustments, punches (as opposed to geolocated trackers), penalties and other items to come to official results.

TL:DR - Take it all with a grain of salt unless told otherwise

Race Update - 9:30 AM

From Race HQ:
Trails around 65 and 66 have been surprisingly closed for mud. For teams that got 65 and 66 before the trails were closed, RDs will eliminate CPs 74 and 78 on the final trek (roughly the same estimated time.)

Current screenshot attached. Racers now have roughly three hours left until the course closes.

Teams that elected to skip TA7/8 and the National Forest Trek are now making their way to TA9 which is also the finish. Arriving there with time to spare, they have the option of setting out for the final trek. Estimated at roughly 2.5 hours, teams that are further back on the leaderboard have the chance to capture these final points, AND leapfrog teams who are going for 7/8 and possibly running out of time.

Once a team realizes that the full course is out of the question, they begin to maximize the points that they can get during the race. Adventure Racing requires teams to call on so many systems to succeed and taking a macro approach to the course is essential if a team knows they won't clear.

The teams on the left side of the attached screenshot are heading north to Mt. Snow which has a final trek and the finish line.

The teams on the right side are heading to the Green Mountain National Forest for the trek and MTB on the next stage. With roughly 6.5 hours of race time left, it's all about getting as much as you can and then making it into the finish line to avoid late penalties.

Good morning, race fans!

As expected, the overnight hours split the field up across the course. Some teams have elected to head towards the later stages and move towards the finish while most of the teams are heading to the trek in the Green Mountain National Forest.

The attached screenshots are of:
- Racer instructions for those sections
- Racer Map #8
- Tracker as of 5:30 AM (teams are all over the course)

Teams have roughly 7 hours to make it to the finish. This is now a race of attrition as the front teams begin to realize that the course may not be clearable and they need to be strategic about what points to go after. The same goes for the midpack teams. A top-ten finish in a race of this intensity and challenge is quite the accomplishment.

Good luck to all and may the odds be ever in their favor.

Teams are descending on Stage 6. Attached is a current tracker, screenshot, the race rules for this stage, and the race map. Teams are now going on 12+ hours of racing with roughly 14 to to. It's dark, fatigue has set in, and this is a combination packraft and trek.

Getting a few hours sleep. Check back in the early morning hours for an update, and be sure to check that tracker. Link below.

As you can see from the following screenshot, teams are scattered all throughout the trek. Keep in mind that teams can split up for this part of the race, so don't be fooled by the dots into thinking that teams are dropping points here. My guess is that we'll have an updated scoreboard by the time the teams get to TA 5/6 in several hours.

The pointy end of the race is starting to make its way north, but the fight for the top spots is still wide open. Another compounding factor is the arrival of the dark and how teams struggle overnight with fatigue, colder weather, and the challenge of night navigation.

Sunset is at 7:50 PM with Sunrise coming at 6:01 AM.
