During World War II, thousands of women answered the call to serve through the WAVES program (Women Accepted for Volunteer Emergency Service), the women's branch of the U.S. Naval Reserve.

But until October 1944, African American women were excluded from joining. But 82 years ago on this very day, October 19, 1944, that changed.

The Navy officially opened its ranks to African American women. Among the first to answer the call were Harriet Ida Pickens and Frances Wills, who made history as the first two African American women commissioned as officers in the U.S. Navy.

At a time when segregation was still deeply rooted in America, these women proudly stepped forward to serve their country while paving the way for generations to come.

A legacy that deserves to be remembered on this historical day for our country.

The American Legion hung out with the Family Crisis Shelter and our very own Grant competed for the belt of most good-looking and most giving! Grant raised close to $20,000 with his auction items and strutted his stuff in thrift store clothes for a good cause!
He took home the 6-lb Zoolander belt and the event as a whole raised over 111,000 for the new space that the Family Crisis Shelter is putting together for our community!

Two Veterans. One great cause!
Tonight - two Veterans will get on the stage for the Second Chance Runway in an effort to raise money for the Family Crisis Shelter! While this isn't typically the fashion (pun intended) you see these two guys in - we're proud of them for stepping out of their comfort zones and raising some money for our community projects!

Tickets are sold out for this night - but we might show you their runway fashion walks after the event! :)

You could be the next Jayla and we can't wait to see what kind of talent comes our way! For more information - reach out to our American Legion page or go and chat with Mr. Mack or Mrs. Bristow at Williston High School.
