Williams connections span the globe! 🌍

While traveling in Iceland, Professor Magnús Bernhardsson had the good fortune of running into two recent Ephs: Theo Detweiler '24 and Dover Sikes '24!

Theo and Dover are currently pursuing their master’s degrees in Environmental Policy at Cambridge University and were visiting Iceland with peers from their program. This wonderful reunion was captured on Skólavörðustígur, with the landmark Hallgríms Church illuminated by the midnight sun in the background. ☀️🏔️

It goes to show that no matter how far from the Purple Valley you go, the Williams community is always close by! 💜

From undergrad papers to published author! 📚✨

We were thrilled to welcome science journalist Elizabeth Preston '07 back to campus earlier this month. Elizabeth graduated with a BA in Biology and English, a powerhouse combination that inspired her career, and she returned to where it all began to celebrate her debut book, "The Creatures' Guide to Caring: How Animal Parents Teach Us That Humans Were Born to Care."

Congratulations, Elizabeth! We are so proud to be a part of your story. 💜

Check out Elizabeth's book and others written by the Williams community on our online bookshelf: https://today.williams.edu/books/

🎬 Filmmaking isn’t just “content," it’s an art form.

With modern media shrinking our attention spans, Gustavo Rosa '10 is challenging his students to think differently and to use filmmaking as a tool to seek answers about how they live, what they value, and who they truly are. ✨

We checked and the original lyrics actually are "something something something" 🎶🏔️

Slate's Lizzie O’Leary ’98 interviewed MIT President Sally Kornbluth ’82 as part of a live discussion with Slate’s “What Next: TBD” podcast. They spoke about the importance of curiosity-driven science, the critical role of science to our nation’s future, and the impact of AI on education.

The most recent episode of A Williams Life podcast features a moving conversation with Kurt Van Steemburg ’75, recorded when he was in hospice with only a few weeks to live. It was a serious conversation, but also one filled with smiles, joy, and laughter, during which Kurt spoke openly and honestly about his life and what lay ahead.

Whether you knew Kurt or not, those who listen to this episode will be inspired by Kurt’s observations on living a good life, as well as preparing for its end with wisdom, courage, humor, and grace.

From Williams to lifelong connection! 💜

Jerry Carlson ‘72, Professor of Media and Communication Arts at CUNY, is pictured here with his former JA James Deutsch '70, a scholar of American culture who has worked extensively with the Smithsonian Institution. They first met in Williams B in the fall of 1968 and have remained in touch ever since, even meeting up in Paris this past January.

In 2024, Deutsch returned as a discussant for "City Cinematheque," a film series on CUNY TV curated by Carlson.
