Fitness For Life Around Grant County

Fitness For Life Around Grant County FFLAG provides several events and is active in many initiatives that promote healthy lifestyles.

The initial concept of starting a local fitness initiative began with concerns from Williamstown Head Start. Head Start employees noticed the rising trend of obesity among their students. In 2001, professionals from social and healthcare organizations and schools joined forces with Williamstown Head Start to raise awareness about physical activity and proper nutrition. These combined efforts forme

d FFLAG (Fitness For Life Around Grant County). In 2004, the major health problems in Grant County were identified to be obesity, to***co use and depression. The FFLAG coalition determined the best way to address these issues was to raise health awareness, partner with worksites to promote employee health, provide opportunities for citizens to improve their health and ensure that new roads, schools and neighborhoods are built with pedestrians and cyclists in mind. In 2009, FFLAG became 501(c)3 organization to become self-sustaining and apply for grants. Currently, FFLAG’s operating budget is made up of a variety of funding sources: the Northern Kentucky Health Department’s contribution; income from grants, fees and donated services. Over several years, the FFLAG coalition has engaged more than 2,600 people each year and raised health awareness to the 24,000 residents of Grant County by providing opportunities to be physically active.

Two Decades of Strides: Derby Dash 5K Celebrates 21st Anniversary

WILLIAMSTOWN — What began as a modest community addition to the Williamstown Derby festival has grown into a cornerstone of local tradition. This past weekend, the Derby Dash 5K marked its 21st annual event, proving that while the festival landscape may change, Williamstown’s appetite for fitness and community spirit remains steadfast.

A Legacy of Growth
The inaugural race kicked off in May 2004, drawing a respectable crowd of 230 participants. At the time, a "Family Deal" could be snagged for just $15, and the race served as a sidecar to the city's larger Derby festivities.

Fast forward to 2026, and the Derby Dash has matured into a powerful standalone event. Despite a brief hiatus during the COVID-19 pandemic—which would have otherwise made this the 22nd year—the race returned stronger than ever. This year’s event saw a record-breaking 337 registered participants take to the pavement, a nearly 47% increase in participation since its inception.

Commitment to Affordability
In an era of rising costs, the Derby Dash has remained a rare bargain for Grant County residents. Organizers have fought to keep entry fees accessible, ensuring the race remains a family-friendly staple.

Registration Tier 2004 Pricing 2026 Pricing
Pre-Registration (No Shirt) $10 $18
Pre-Registration (With Shirt) $15 $25
Race Day Adult (No Shirt) $20 $25
Race Day Shirt Purchase $10 $15

"The race is now a stand-alone event on Derby Day in Williamstown, but it remains an impactful event for the community," organizers noted, highlighting the introduction of modern group rates—$20 per person for groups of five or more—to encourage local teams and families to participate.

Looking Ahead
As the dust settles on this year’s success, the community is already looking toward the horizon. The 2026 finish line serves as the starting blocks for next year’s planning.

The 2027 Derby Dash 5K is officially scheduled for Saturday, May 1, 2027. Runners, walkers, and families are encouraged to mark their calendars for another chapter in Williamstown's premier racing tradition.
