It's almost lunch time! Consider eating at Gold Star and rounding up to support 1N5, a non-profit based out of Cincinnati that works to promote optimal mental wellness and prevent su***de.

Can't make it today? You can support them any time during the month of May which is Mental Health Awareness Month!

1N5 has been a GREAT to both Grant County Schools and Williamstown Independent Schools. They are not strangers over the river - they are phenomenal people who expanded their services into Kentucky schools and have joined us to protect our youth right here in Grant County!

NEW PRODUCT ALERT

Yet another product that manufacturer's will insist is not designed for young people to conceal v**e use even though one online retailer highlights features such as a replaceable personal filter to absorb the exhaled v***r and five color options to 'fit your lifestyle'.

It would be negligent if we did not point out that an FDA -approved PRESCRIPTION ni****ne inhaler is available to help manage withdrawal as with other ni****ne replacement therapies (NRT) such as patches, gum, etc. More can be learned at www.cdc.gov/tobacco/campaign/tips/quit-smoking/quit-smoking-medications/how-to-use-quit-smoking-medicines/how-to-use-a-ni****ne-oral-inhaler.html

HOWEVER, claims that v**e inhalers are ni****ne-free, flavored air devices are false.

⚠ How can you tell if a minor is using a real inhale or a v**e inhaler?

A medically necessary inhaler will include the brand name, concentration, etc. on the metal canister inside the colored cover. The metal canister can be removed and would reveal an empty tube that the product would move through.

A v**e inhaler will say something along the lines of "400 metered aroma clouds" rather than a brand name and concentration. Instead of the 'metal canister' being removed, the colored cover is removed to store the v**e cart. There may also be a warning on the 'metal canister' that may read something along the lines of "This is not medicine. For theatrical use only. Not made to help breathing, ingesting, real-life problem solving".

The data speaks for itself. THIS is why it is so important the we target our youth substance use prevention efforts on alcohol and ma*****na which are legal, or partially legal, substances. Addiction doesn't start with illicit substances.

As shared by the Addiction Policy Forum, "Alcohol use disorder accounts for more than half of all substance use disorders in the U.S." Cannabis (ma*****na) is not far behind.

Working with teens? This webinar can help change how you see behavior.

What if teen behaviors like risk-taking, impulsive decisions and emotional reactions were not considered problems to eliminate, but instead signals of how the adolescent brain is developing?

In this one-hour webinar, our experts explore the teenage years with the goal of helping anyone who works with young people understand why teens behave the way they do and how that knowledge can strengthen their work with both youth and their families.

Presented by Partnership to End Addiction's:
Molly Bobek, L.C.S.W., Vice President, Family and Adolescent Clinical Technology and Science (FACTS) and Cori Hammond, M.P.H, Senior Director, Prevention Services
