Before it was a hashtag, Black August was a discipline.

Born in California’s prisons in 1979, Black August began as a way for incarcerated Black organizers to honor the freedom fighters who came before them — through fasting from sunup to sundown, studying revolutionary history, physical training, and abstaining from entertainment for the month.

It has since grown into a national tradition of remembrance, resistance, and renewal — carried forward every August by communities like ours.

Today, those traditions live on in many ways including education, art, joy, and communal care.

This year, we’re bringing that spirit back to Williamston.

“Black August on the Block” is our love letter to the beloved community. Through music, fellowship, storytelling, and recognition- we honor the people and traditions that have shaped our community while imagining a future of abundance for generations to come.
