🏊 LONG AQUATICS UPDATE 🏊
We want you to know that we are equally—if not more—frustrated with the current status of the pool and hot tub following our recent draining and cleaning project.
Over the past 12 days, our team dedicated countless hours to completing extensive maintenance and improvements throughout the aquatic area. With a team consisting of two maintenance staff members, several lifeguards, branch directors, a group exercise instructor, and a corporate staff member we accomplished an incredible amount of work, including but not limited to:
✅ Replacing deck grates
✅ Power washing the pool deck and pool walls
✅ Clearing drains
✅ Thoroughly cleaning and wiping down pool surfaces
✅ Regrouting the steam room bench
✅ Rebuilding the dry sauna
✅ Removing and replacing 650 pounds of sand in the sand filters
✅ Recaulking the entire perimeter of the pool using more than 120 tubes of caulk
Several staff also stayed after hours to help ensure the work was completed on schedule.
Despite several unexpected setbacks, our team remained ahead of schedule. We worked with the water authority and fire department to begin refilling the pool five days earlier than originally planned. By Sunday afternoon, both the pool and hot tub were filled, heated, and chemically balanced.
When we reopened on Monday, the hot tub unexpectedly lost some of its heat, while the pool remained in excellent condition. Members who visited commented on how clean the deck looked and how great the entire aquatic area appeared.
Unfortunately, sometime Monday night, the automated chemical control system malfunctioned. The system dispensed an excessive amount of chlorine into the pool while chlorine levels in the hot tub dropped to zero.
During the maintenance process, our team also inspected the pump room equipment, including the siphons, tubes, and pumps that dispense chlorine into both the pool and hot tub. Everything appeared to be functioning properly at that time.
While sharing the work completed during the shutdown doesn't solve the current issues any faster, we want our members to know that our staff is doing everything possible to get both amenities back up and running safely.
Our Aquatics Director, Jayda Beagle, has been actively working to resolve the issue. She has, met with our pool supplier, developed a corrective plan, and has already begun taking steps to restore proper operation and the chlorine is already lowering in the pool!
At this time, our goal is to reopen both the pool and hot tub tomorrow, provided all systems are functioning properly and water chemistry returns to safe operating levels.
We apologize for this inconvenience and appreciate your patience and understanding. Please know that we share your frustration and remain committed to resolving these issues as quickly and safely as possible. Also, the steam room and sauna will remain open during the pool and hot tub closures.
Please continue to follow our social media page for updates regarding the pool and hot tub reopening.
We will share information as soon as it becomes available.
Thank you for your continued support of the Williamsport Branch YMCA.
