Conservation education and advocacy are important functions of an Audubon chapter. Since its formation in 1968 LAS has participated in the preservation and enhancement of

the natural environment in Lycoming and Clinton counties through many activities. The chapter draws from its many conservation-minded members to identify and research issues critical to our mission, and voices an advocacy opinion on those issues when appropriate. In addition, LAS members are also active in a number of broader important monitoring programs, including two annual Christmas Bird Counts and the annual PA Migration Count sponsored by the Pennsylvania Society of Ornithology. Our community recognizes LAS conservation positions and expertise, and we are regularly involved through consultations, agreements and hands-on participation. We hold field trips regularly on an informal basis led by one or more of the chapter’s ardent “birders”. Everyone is welcome to participate regardless of their birding experience. Our meetings are open to the public and often feature a birding excursion or a conservation topics. We are an active group. In addition to the meetings, public presentations, and birding outings, members volunteer to: pick up litter through the Adopt-a-Highway proram, cooperate with Loyalsock Township in Lycoming County in the maintenance of their Riverfront Park/Canfield Island complex to enhance the habitat for various species of birds, maintain a number of Blue Bird Trails and monitor reproductive success, manage "housing" for ducks and Purple Martins at various locations, transport injured wildlife to rehabilitators, educate middle schoolers in bird habitat and identification in an outdoor setting, and write periodic op-eds and letters to the editor of our local news media in support of environmental advocacy. We have some family fun in the summer with our annual picnic at a park and near Christmas with a banquet at some nice venue. We have a permanent mailing address of PO Box 4053, Williamsport, PA 17701-6053, and monthly meetings are held in the Lowry Room, 3rd floor, J V Brown Library in downtown Williamsport starting at 6:00 pm te fourth Wednesday of most months.
