On this day in 1817, Jane Austen died at the age of 41. In mourning, her sister Cassandra wrote: ‘She was the sun of my life, the gilder of every pleasure, the soother of every sorrow.’

The world lost a literary giant and Jane was never to know the full extent of her influence. 📖

Today at Jane Austen’s House, we will be remembering Jane and her incredible legacy and celebrating her life and works with our visitors, as this year the anniversary also sits on our annual Dress Up Day.

Of interest to some of us, perhaps! I attended the ball last year and had the most splendid time, and I hope some day to attend the whole conference, but it can't be this summer. Anybody care to go and tell me all about it so I can experience it vicariously?

JASP 2026 takes place June 11-14 in historic Greensburg, PA. In line with our theme "Pride, Prejudice, and the Pursuit of Happiness," we will explore topics that connect Austen's beloved novel Pride and Prejudice to the revolutionary context in which it was written.

JASP is a four-day symposium exploring Jane Austen through lectures, workshops, small-group discussions and other activities, including a Regency ball. It is designed to appeal to anyone with a passion for all things Austen. Attendees include people from all walks of life, as well as established scholars, high school teachers, and students from middle school through graduate school.

Dear friends, having observed the approach of yet another snowy weekend, the decision has been taken to postpone Mr. Steplively's waltz class. We are thrilled that there was such interest, however, and we're hopeful that the class may be rescheduled soon--possibly as early as next Friday, February 6th, in the evening. If not then, there will certainly be waltzing on some more auspicious date this spring. Should you wish to be informed directly of future waltz opportunities, please comment to that effect here or message this page, and I will take down your name for further communications!
