William & Mary Africana House

William & Mary Africana House The Africana House provides a setting where students are introduced to the history, cultures, and current events of the African Diaspora

Africana House is a living and learning community that promotes awareness of and explores the scholarship on the history, cultural traditions, political, and economic circumstances that together define over 1.2 billion people of African descent. This community (limited to 23 students) is intended to broaden the learning experience at W&M beyond the traditional classroom, while providing a smaller

village-like setting within the larger university in which students live and work together. Starting in the fall of 2016, Africana House will offer themes to be pursued throughout the year. The theme for 2016-2017 is Black Lives Matter. Throughout the year, students will actively work and participate in programs pertaining to Black Lives Matter. Programming is student developed and student led with Africana Studies faculty support. Students will have a $1000 budget to use toward programming and activities. Each semester, students will work towards a final project or event that can be shared with the W&M community. https://www.wm.edu/news/stories/2014/inside-the-africana-house123.php

On behalf of the Africana House, we want to say thank you to all of the people who came out and filled our seats. We encourage everyone to learn from our guest speaker, Travis Harris, as he connected his own upbringing to the Black Lives Matter movement. Remember that WE have the power to control the narrative told in the years to come. Do not let your voice be neutralized. The time is now.
