Bayou Sunset Party - A Beautiful Night for Celebrating Conservation

Historic Virginia Land Conservancy (HVLC) celebrated its 35th Anniversary with two hundred wonderful supporters and friends on April 25, 2026, at the organization's Bayou Sunset Party held at Nettle's Creek Farm in James City County. Presenting sponsor Chesapeake Bank and Chesapeake Wealth Management along with band sponsor, Revival Consignment and bar sponsor Spark Financial Advisors lent their considerable support to the event that celebrated 35 years of land conservation and the 35th Anniversary Honorees who were recognized that evening. David and Stephanie Allen, landowners of the conserved Nettle’s Creek Farm, were named HVLC’s 2026 Conservation Champions for their conservation efforts and their commitment to conservation sustainability.

Table sponsors Bartlett Tree Experts, Henry S. Branscome, LLC, Cullom & Farah Eye & Laser Center, N and R Dining, RJS and Associates, Andrea and Michael Harlow, Kaufman and Canoles, KelRae Farm, PB Mares, Langenhennig Real Estate - Coldwell Banker Traditions, Lochlin Partners, and Simerlein Appraisals were all on hand to support HVLC. Susan and Tom Chamberlain were the dessert and wine pull sponsors.

Live music was provided by Bobby Hornsby with Susie and the Pistols, with a lively mix of honky-tonk and classic rock music for all to enjoy!

Fresh shucked oysters (Big Island Aquaculture) beef brisket, shrimp etouffee, mac and cheese, southern style greens, craft beer, great wine, and some very sweet desserts (Williamsburg Concessions and Catering) made for an incredible dining experience.

A fabulous auction with auctioneers Rick and Lara Overy with assistance from Aaron Williams had bidders raising their numbers high for super items and experiences from Fat Canary, Computer Concepts of Williamsburg, Iron-Bound Gym, Friday's Malise Marine, R Bryant, Williamsburg Charter Sails, Ace Peninsula Hardware, Williamsburg Concessions and Catering and Giuseppes Italian Restaurant.

The evening wrapped up with the premiere of HVLC's 35th Anniversary video and a paddle raise for support of conservation of historic landscapes, old growth forests, family farms and conservation education.

HVLC is very grateful for the incredible community of support from sponsors, volunteers, donors, and friends of HVLC. Many thanks to all and we look forward to conserving community treasures for the next century and beyond. HVLC is continuing to prepare for a sustainable future for conservation in our community with a membership drive with the goal of bringing in 500 new members.

The Historic Virginia Land Conservancy honored sixteen community members at its 35th anniversary gala, the “Bayou Sunset Party” at Nettle’s Creek Farm in James City County on April 25, 2026.

Current HVLC Board Chair, Ryan Stephenson, recognized the group, and remarked that each of these individuals have gone “above and beyond” in their commitment to conservation and the work of the Historic Virginia Land Conservancy (HVLC). He then proposed a toast to the honorees and their significant contributions to the growth and sustainability of HVLC.

The Historic Virginia Land Conservancy has grown by more than 80% since its inception in 1990. HVLC now protects agricultural, historic, scenic, and public lands in 16 counties and cities throughout the region. As the area’s premiere and fully accredited land trust, HVLC has protected more than 15, 600 acres in 87 conservation easements.

Executive Director Elizabeth Friel shared that this group represents the leaders, innovators, and supporters who impactfully shaped HVLC. She said that the group includes those who led the HVLC from the start; led the expansion to the Middle Peninsula and the Southside; provided key legal, financial, historic, and environmental expertise; led through professional accreditation; and those who have generously and thoughtfully supported HVLC through the years.

“As we look toward the next chapter for HVLC, it is the legacy of these honorees that we must not only recognize but also build upon.” said Ms. Friel.
