Last evening Professor Emerita Jacquelyn Y. McLendon spoke about her new book "Building on the Legacy: African Americans at William & Mary, An Illustrated History of 50 Years and Beyond”. This book explores the gradual advancement of Black people at the university including the first undergraduate African American students in residence as well as a history of African Americans who served as faculty and in leadership roles at William & Mary. The multi-media work “Lemonade,” featured in Dr. McLendon’s lecture, was created in 2017 in commemoration of the first African American residential students who arrived in 1967. See “Lemonade” on view at Swem Library and pick up a copy of "Building on the Legacy" to learn more!
