Literacy for Life is pleased to welcome our new Development Specialist, Joan Polaschik!

Prior to joining our staff as Development Specialist, Joan served as a volunteer ESL instructor with Literacy for Life, following a path taken by several other staff members who first connected with the organization through volunteer service. A retired diplomat, Joan spent the last three years of her career leading the U.S. Department of State’s foreign affairs training academy. Her development experience includes raising funds for the establishment of an American School in Algeria, partnering with foundations to develop diplomatic training programs, and creating public-private partnerships around the world. Fun fact: Joan loves to be in and on the water and is excited to kayak the Peninsula’s many waterways.

At today's Celebration of Lifelong Learning we celebrated the achievements of our learners and the power of a community working together to create opportunity. From earning a diploma to becoming a U.S. citizen, from obtaining workforce certification to gaining confidence in everyday life, every milestone represents determination, growth, and hope for the future. Thank you to our learners, tutors, staff, donors, and partners for making this a special day! Special thanks to Sentara Health for being our Presenting Sponsor!

We’re excited to partner with THRIVE Peninsula on the Rev Up Program!

Rev Up helps families stay housed while working toward better-paying jobs through hands-on job coaching and short-term financial support. Over three months, participants gain the tools, confidence, and stability they need to move beyond crisis and build a stronger financial future.

Frances (pictured), Literacy for Life’s Career Coach, will provide career coaching and support to a portion of the program’s participants. We’re grateful for the opportunity to work alongside community partners to help individuals and families build brighter futures.

In the spring of 2023, Antoinette (left) came to Literacy for Life with a goal: earning her high school diploma. Since then, she has worked diligently alongside her tutor, Bonnie (right), through the National External Diploma Program, showing perseverance and determination every step of the way.

Yesterday, that hard work paid off. Antoinette officially received her diploma!

Congratulations, Antoinette, on this tremendous achievement! And thank you, Bonnie, for providing encouragement and support!

We’re grateful to our friends at Chesapeake Bank, who returned last night to lead another financial literacy class for our learners.

Thomas and Maggie shared valuable information about credit cards, credit scores, and how to make credit work for you rather than credit card companies. These are important skills that help our learners build confidence and create stronger financial futures.

Chesapeake Bank is generously sponsoring the spring session at our Peninsula Center location in Newport News. Thank you for investing in our learners and our community!

We’re excited to welcome Mia back to Literacy for Life!

Mia will spend the summer supporting our team by collecting learner data, substitute teaching, helping staff prepare for the upcoming school year, and more. Her willingness to jump in wherever needed has a meaningful impact on both our staff and learners.

Fun fact: Mia is a rising junior at Virginia Commonwealth University, where she is majoring in music education. She enjoys playing the cello in the VCU orchestra.

For Annie, earning her GED was about more than a diploma. It was about creating new opportunities for her future.

When she came to Literacy for Life, the math portion of the GED felt like a major hurdle. But with the support of her tutor, Mike, Annie kept pushing forward.

In April, she officially earned her GED. That same day, she enrolled in a culinary course to help professionalize her home baking business and continue pursuing her goals.

Stories like Annie’s remind us that it’s never too late to learn, grow, and build the future you want.
