***TAX-AIDE OPENS JANUARY 31***
The 2025 tax season has begun, and AARP Foundation Tax-Aide is here to help, offering services from January 31 to April 15.
***Appointments can be made on-line or by phone. Walk-ins are also welcome, as schedules allow. We will be open for walk-ins at the Williamsburg library on January 31st with appointments starting thereafter at both Williamsburg and James City libraries. ***DIY Option Available. In addition to the traditional full-service option in which a counselor prepares and e-files your return, we now offer a Do-It-Yourself (DIY) option. Users with an Adjusted Gross Income (AGI) below $89,000 will be eligible to prepare their own 2025 tax returns using Tax-Aide-provided computers and software. IRS-certified volunteers will provide on-site support, but participants must ensure both the accuracy and completeness of their returns.
***New Locations. In addition to Williamsburg and James City, we are now offering the DIY (only) service at the New Kent and Charles City Heritage Libraries.

TAX-AIDE PREPARING FOR EXPANDED SERVICE
Starting in February 2026, users with an Adjusted Gross Income (AGI) below $86,000 will be eligible to prepare their own 2025 tax returns using Tax-Aide-provided computers and software. IRS-certified volunteers will provide on-site expert tax and software support, but participants are responsible for ensuring both accuracy and completeness of their returns. This service will be available at the Williamsburg, James City, Charles City, and New Kent libraries.

This complements Tax-Aide’s continued full-service option at the Williamsburg and James City libraries. These two services will accommodate both those who prefer either the traditional option or the DIY approach. More information will be provided in January, including appointment capabilities.

VOLUNTEERS NEEDED FOR TAX-AIDE
Tax-Aide is a free tax preparation service that helps people who can't prepare their own tax returns or pay someone else to do it.

We prepare nearly 3,000 tax returns annually between January 31st and April 15th at our two full-service sites, where counselors prepare and file client returns: downtown Williamsburg library and James City library on Croaker Road. Training for new counselors and new client facilitators is provided in January with the New Volunteer Orientation planned for December 4 at the Stryker Center.

These are the new volunteer opportunities:
· Tax Counselor - Interview clients, assess their tax situation, and prepare the federal and state tax returns to be e-filed. Counselors receive 40 hours of training, prepare practice returns, and take tests on procedures, standards, preparation. Counselors should expect to work 1 or 2 shifts per week.
· Client Facilitator: Greet, register, and screen clients; handle appointments and record status of each return. Facilitators receive 8-10 hours of training and take two 10 question tests on procedures and standards

National Slam the Scam Day
Help protect your loved ones and people in your community this Slam the Scam Day. Learning about the latest scams. Information can empower you to quickly recognize a scam. Signs of a scam include:
***An unexpected problem or offer of a prize or benefit increase,
***Pressure to act immediately, and
***A request for an unusual payment like cryptocurrency, gift cards, gold bars, and wire transfers, even with the promise of keeping your money “safe.”
Reporting scams as soon as possible. Victims shouldn’t be embarrassed if they shared personal information or suffered a financial loss. We are all vulnerable. Report Social Security-related scams to the Social Security Administration Office of the Inspector General (OIG).

***Tax Season is Here***
The 2024 tax season is here, and Greater Williamsburg Tax-Aide is here to help. We will operate out of both library locations (downtown Williamsburg on Scotland St as well as the James City library on Croaker Road).

Service begins on February 1st and continues through April 15th. AARP Foundation Tax-Aide provides free tax counseling, preparation, and filing service to taxpayers with low to moderate income, with special attention to those aged 60 and older.

For those wishing to making appointments, you will be able to use the on-line process initiated last year in addition to a call-in option. Walk-ins are also welcome, as schedules allow. We will be open for walk-ins starting February 1st with appointments beginning February 3rd.
