Williamsburg’s Historic First Baptist Church is expanding its security measures this summer as it prepares for a surge of visitors marking the 250th anniversary of the Declaration of Independence.

The landmark church, home to one of the oldest African American congregations in the country, is adding more cameras and metal detectors to protect worshippers and guests.

Leaders say the goal is to ensure the building remains a welcoming space while guarding against the rising trend of attacks on houses of worship.
