Happy Martin Luther King Day!

Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. visited Williamsburg, Virginia, on June 26, 1962, speaking at the historic First Baptist Church to a large, integrated audience about the civil rights struggle, delivering a powerful message of non-violent resistance and inspiring local activism before the era of his famous "I Have a Dream" speech. His stop was significant for galvanizing the community.

Happy Kwanzaa!

Kwanzaa's seven principles, called the Nguzo Saba, are core values guiding the celebration:

Day 1. Umoja (Unity) - Striving for and maintaining unity in the family and community
Day 2. Kujichagulia (Self-Determination) - Defining, naming, creating, and speaking for oneself
Day 3. Ujima (Collective Work & Responsibility) - Building and maintaining the community together and solving problems collectively
Day 4. Ujamaa (Cooperative Economics) - Building and supporting one's own businesses, shops, and stores
Day 5. Nia (Purpose) - Making the collective vocation the building and development of the community to restore its traditional greatness
Day 6. Kuumba (Creativity) - Always doing as much as possible to leave the community more beautiful and beneficial.
Day 7.  Imani (Faith) - Believing with all one's heart in people, parents, teachers, leaders, and the victory of the struggle

Each principle represents a day of reflection and focus from December 26 to January 1, encouraging community building, self-reliance, and cultural pride through shared traditions, feasts, and symbols like the seven candles (Mishumaa Saba).

At our Youth Council meeting on December 1st each of our members rang a bell in honor of the moment 70 years ago when Rosa Parks made a powerful choice that changed the history of our nation. 🙏🏽 Thank you Rosa Parks 💖

Rosa Parks' Arrest: On December 1, 1955, Parks was arrested at 6:06 PM on a bus in Montgomery, Alabama, for refusing to give her seat to a white passenger.

The Law: Her refusal violated the city's segregation laws, which required Black passengers to give up their seats to white passengers when the bus became full.

The Aftermath: Parks' arrest was a catalyst that led to the Montgomery Bus Boycott, a major event in the Civil Rights Movement that began the next day.

The Legacy: The 70th anniversary of her arrest was marked on December 1, 2025, with events to honor her act of defiance.

Scholarship Opportunity:

This message is from Dr. Glenda Glover, President of Tennessee State University and her Community Affairs Liaison, Mrs. Barbara Murrell. There is a program between TSU and Meharry Medical College where the student would go to TSU for three years and then on to Meharry and finish to become an MD or DDS in 7 years instead of the traditional 8 years.

They have enough females already signed up for the program and no black males. If you know any black males who are high school seniors that want to become a medical doctor, have a 28 on the ACT and a 3.5 GPA, I have a possible free ride for them at Tennessee State University. You can send prospective candidates information to [email protected]. She will forward to President Glover and Mrs. Barbara Murrell.
The student’s info needs to be submitted ASAP.”
