We posted an update from Ken on our website yesterday but thought we would share it here as well.

Update from Ken: 12-8-15

This update comes with a heavy heart as we regretfully inform our Landfillart family of the loss of one very special member, Larry Carroll of Hermosa Beach, CA recently passed away. His initial contribution to the Landfillart project, Egg in Space, was only the start of the dedication of time and talent that he would lend to our cause. His artwork was included in the exhibition at the Museum of the Shenandoah Valley in September of 2014 in more ways than one. The 60-second promotional video, as well as the longer feature film that was created for Second Time Around, were both great evidence of his work and talent. His death is a great loss to everyone who knew him. Larry will be greatly missed by many, including us here at The Landfillart Project, the art community and the entertainment industry. Our sincerest condolences to his family in this time of mourning.

It's a beautiful, clear, sunny day here at Landfillart, Sarah Cassidy's piece is a perfect one to share today!

SARAH CASSIDY
PEACE, UNDER AND SKYE

Laguna, California

Sarah was born in Los Angeles, California. In 1974, she started her formal training in art working with independent and accomplished artists and masters of sculpture. Sarah’s concentration in art is in the human form and expression of emotion; selectively creating with a diverse range of mediums: pen and ink, charcoal, oil, acrylics, water colors and pressed wax. At the heart of Sarah’s work is the local and untouched environmental palette that dominates her offerings of today. Her paintings have also been the backdrop in television productions. She paints for private collectors and is painting property scenes for the Montage Resort and Spa in Laguna Beach.

“To be involved in this project is a privilege, any effort, small or large, is a dedication to the recovery and preservation of the earth. This is one step of many in raising environmental consciousness. Always great to create for the cause!!”
---Sarah Cassidy

Thanks to The MSV for taking things to another level with all of it's Second Time Around inspired workshops! You still have time to see selected works from The Landfillart Project at The Museum of the Shenandoah Valley. The exhibit runs through March 1st and if you're feeling crafty you can still sign up for the Repurposed Lighting Workshop on February 28th!

Upcycling at the MSV! In celebration of the repurposing theme of the special MSV exhibition "Second Time Around: The Hubcap as Art," the MSV is offering repurposed lighting workshops during which vintage colanders, graters, and bed springs will be transformed into fun light fixtures. Here are some fun pictures of creativity in action at the February 12 class. There's still space in the February 28 workshop. Don't miss the fun! Photos by Rick Foster.

When The Landfillart Project began, the mission was not only to use discarded hubcaps to create unique pieces of fine art but also to raise awareness. The goal has always been to inspire others to re-purpose "garbage", reuse something that would normally end up in a landfill. Two groups of students from Virginia, where a selection of Landfillart objects are currently on display, have done just that. Inspired by Second Time Around: The Hubcap As Art, Art In The Halls at The Musuem of the Shenandoah Valley in Wi******er, VA features hubcaps created by 8th graders from a private school and art appreciation students from the local university, on display until April 19th.

Nearly 100 guests arrived to view works of art made out of repurposed hubcaps created by students from Shenandoah University (SU) and Clarke County’s Powhatan School. Now on view, the new "Art in the Halls" displays mark the first time that student art has been featured in "Art in the Halls." Both displays were inspired by the "Second Time Around: The Hubcap as Art" exhibition.

In Lewis Hall, 28 works created by SU students enrolled in last fall’s Art Appreciation course are on view in the display, "Third Time Around: Shenandoah University Students Twirl the Hubcap." The display in Glaize Hall showcases the work of 26 eighth-grade art students from Powhatan School in Boyce, Virginia.

Presented through April 19, the new Art in the Halls displays are available for viewing free of charge; Museum admission is not required.
