Cotinga Foundation

Cotinga Foundation Cotinga Foundation exists to equip special education teachers in the developing world through free seminars and mentoring from practicing professionals.

In June of 2011, my husband and I, plus 6 other people from our church went on a mission trip to Cayambe, Ecuador. My cousins, David and Brenda Meyer, have been missionaries there for many years and invited us to come on the trip to help rebuild the church and community center. We had excellent timing because on our first day the town was holding a Rose Parade. One of the groups in particular caug

ht my eye; it was from Instituto Fiscal de Educacion Especial, a special education school there in Cayambe. As a special education teacher, I wanted to know more about those kids and I asked the missionaries about them, but they didn’t know anything about the school.

In the spring of 2014, as we were preparing to go to Ecuador for the third time, I again thought about the special needs children I had seen on my first trip, and wondered if there was anything that I could do to help. I asked David Meyer to find out if I could visit the school one day while I was there. He went to the school and spent some time with the Director. After a couple of visits, the Director invited me to come and spend a week in their school. He was open to me working with the students and working with the teachers. Just about 12 weeks later, I traveled to Cayambe by myself, a week ahead of the team from our church. The teachers were hesitant to talk to me at first, but quickly became interested as they told me about problems in their classrooms, and I responded with solutions from my own classroom experience and education. I found that they have a passion for their students but unfortunately very little training and almost no resources.

The main question on the first day was whether I thought their students could learn. The answer was a resounding ‘yes’. Their kids have great abilities. They are very open to ideas and learning. In the last twenty years, no one has ever come to help the teachers or students, and a little training went a long way to help them. For example, one little boy was only able to scribble, but using a magnifying glass was able to write his name perfectly. One little girl didn’t speak, but I was able to get her to imitate every word that I said using some simple speech therapy techniques. The school invited the parents to a meeting one afternoon. Over 80 parents came. They all wanted to know if I thought their students could learn – the same question the teachers had. I talked to them about teaching their child throughout each part of their lives: counting potatoes while cooking, teaching them words while they are shopping, showing them money, etc. They stood in line an hour and a half after the meeting to ask more questions. The teachers and parents were eager to help their students but just needed some ideas of what to do, which no one had ever shared with them before. CurriculumI was able to take with me some simple resources which were of great help to the teachers because the government does not pay for anything beyond the special education teacher salaries in Ecuador. The school did not have any books at all! I took weighted vests which can assist special education students on focusing in the classroom, as well a Spanish curriculum and other basic supplies. I also had a quilted bag full of supplies for each teacher. They were so excited to brainstorm ways to use each item in the bag. We talked about teaching words to the kids by labeling everything, how to teach them how to write a sentence, how to teach math using cards or dice or calculators, how to use index cards and dry erase boards. All of these items seem simple and basic in the US but the teachers there would not have them if I had not brought them. With only me, for one week, with a few supplies I was able to make a huge difference in the lives of the special education students at that school in Ecuador. Since returning from that trip God has put a passion in my heart to continue to help these students and more like them in South America. The quality of life of so many people can be dramatically improved with a little training! This is why I have started the Cotinga Foundation.

Exactly four weeks from today, 6 teachers will be riding in bus for about 6 hours on their way to Chiquimula, Guatemala. Last year, in partnership with Eyes Wide Open Ministries, we presented seminars in three areas to a total of 105 teachers from 35 schools. We’ve been asked to add another area this year so that more teachers can be helped. We shipped hundreds of pounds of supplies last month, and those have arrived. We’ll be bringing more things with us. We want to be able to give each teacher printed books and picture books for their class level, plus hands on materials to provide for better learning. We also give each school a flash drive with all the curriculum that Cotinga has written, plus almost 1000 books at every grade level that can be printed off. We will also be working with the directors of schools to give advice on how to meet the needs of ALL students. Would you consider helping us with this last push? Every dollar given goes directly to help the teachers and students.

What you might not know about all of our trips to Ecuador: We could NOT have accomplished anything without a huge infrastructure of help! Dave, Brenda, Daniel and Luke Meyer started helping and supporting us from the very beginning. In fact, it was Dave's idea for me to visit Giovanni Calles in 2014. Brenda translated for us, cooked dinner for us every night and put up with all of our stuff all over her house. Both the boys translated and helped with anything else needed. Then they enlisted the unbelievable support of their church: Buen Pastor. Orlando was our Director of Transportation. He took care of getting us everywhere in multiple vehicles all day and night. Gissela was in charge of shopping and kitchen so that we had wonderful, authentic Ecuadorian meals every day. She enlisted a whole kitchen of ladies to help. In fact, they cooked 70 lunches for the teachers every day last year! They did all this from hearts that love God. This was not their ministry or even their passion, but they DO have a passion of service to others. We loved worshipping with you each year. GRACIAS, Buen Pastor for your many years of selfless support to Cotinga Foundation.

For the first time in over 10 years, I am not going to Ecuador in March. For years, I went in March to prepare for the Cotinga team in June. Often David and I would present seminars to large groups of teachers from other areas. In the last two years, the team went in March. Last year was my 20th trip to Ecuador. BUT the teachers of Giovanni Calles have worked so hard and made such great progress, that all year long they use the curriculum and resources that Cotinga has provided. When Cotinga Foundation was first created and started helping in Cayambe, UDAI didn't even exist. Now this great group of supervisors uses Cotinga ideas throughout the general education schools. SO Cotinga Foundation is going to concentrate on our new work in Guatemala. The teachers there have asked for our help, love the students and have many needs. But we will miss our wonderful friends in Ecuador. We will miss seeing the students year after year. GRACIAS, Giovanni Calles and UDAI for allowing us to be part of your lives. We pray for your continued progress and that some day God will provide enough resources for us to visit again.

Our UPS store called us to come pick up ALL of the wonderful boxes that arrived recently. What a great surprise! So many of you have sent books for our trip to Guatemala. The teachers don‘t have access to fun kids books in Spanish for their classrooms. We have 180 books so far (Yay!!), but we worked with 104 teachers last year. We are hoping for more teachers this June. If only we could give each teacher 3 books for their class. What a wonderful thing! We have the ability to ship the books ahead of time to Guatemala, but must have them by April 10th. If you want to donate a book, go to our Amazon wishlist. You can donate with your name or your grandchild’s name or in memory of someone and we’ll label them. Help us spread this joy.

BIG ANNOUNCEMENT! We are happy to announce that Cotinga Foundation has a team of 4 veteran Cotinga teachers (Terry, Kathi, Ellen, Lauren), one new Cotinga teacher (Kerri) and one returning Cotinga teacher (Sarah - 2017) going to Chiquimula, Guatemala June 6-13th. We can't wait to continue the work that we started last August. We are excited to see our new friends at Eyes Wide Open Ministries, that invited us and were SO instrumental in every part of every day of the trip. We are also excited to see the directors from our 3 host schools in different towns: CEICA, El Morral, and Veguitas. We were able to work with 35 SCHOOLS during our time there. We are hoping to impact more teachers and schools this year. If you could help with the resources that we need for this trip, please consider donating at our website. Please pray for us as we create our seminars and documents to share with all of these wonderful teachers. Thank you for your support!
