Fun, fun day at the April Homestead for Geo-Caching Pioneer Style with the GS Silver Trefoil Alumnae.

Four Junior scouts went through the course and they had a lot of fun. They used compasses and paces for part of the course, trail blazes and trail markings for the other parts. They had four stations to navigate to and four actors with which to interact- a blacksmith, a rancher, a neighbor and a dairy maid. At each station they had an action to do such as reciting the GS promise, singing a song they had just learned at the start of the day, telling a knock-knock joke and naming the cow (now named Petunia.) They also needed to trade something in their sack for something they would use when they ended up at Homestead. When they reached Homestead the installed a Return This Way trail mark.
Once at Homestead, girls snacked on journey cakes also known as Johnny cakes with some homemade butter (from the dairy maid) and strawberry jam (from the neighbor).
They used a hammer from the blacksmith on the leather “scraps” from the rancher to hand stamp bookmarks.

After typing up the directions from the prior week's course set up, a team of GS Silver Trefoil Alumnae reviewed their compass skills then set off to follow the course. Luckily good notes were taken during the set up so that only a few tweaks were needed before we could send the girls out on the course for the event that Saturday

Fun morning at camp for the GS Silver Trefoil Alumnae as they laid out a course for the April Homestead event - Geocaching Pioneer Style. It’s going to be a mix of orienteering, trail blazing and trail marking. So very grateful for the time, energy and enthusiasm of volunteers like Laura and Susan. We had to brush up on our compass skills and trail marking but it was a beautiful day to walk around camp.

March had Daisies at Homestead with the GS Silver Trefoil Alumnae. They made biscuits, chopped strawberries, whipped cream by hand (had to add some adult muscle). Next they worked in the garden planting some Seminole squash seeds and a few new plants. We painted on canvas bags with mud and clay. Then we got to eat the biscuits, strawberries and whipped cream. Yum. Then time for clean and group photo.

Busy morning. The weather was perfect. The girls were great. For most of them it was their first time ever at a Girl Scout camp. After the hike back to the parking lot, I’m sure they slept well on the way home. Two girls were from a neighboring council and the other three came up from Tampa. One mom said she was on the verge of tears because she felt this was such a great experience for her daughter.

Back in February we had Hearts 4 Homestead clean up day at the Homestead site with the GS Silver Trefoil Alumnae. Last year we cleaned and organized the storage room and this year we tackled the main room. Items were inventoried, cleaned, sorted and reinstalled. It was long overdue and much needed. A new fire pit was also installed at the site. There is still more to be done but we made a lot of progress today.
