Wilber Garden Club

Wilber Garden Club To create beauty in our town. The Wilber Garden Club is responsible for the upkeep of the three memorial gardens at the Wilber City Park and the Flower Corner.

The club meets the first Thursday of every month (except January and August) and we host our annual Flower Show in June. The club also gives out a scholarship each year to a Wilber-Clatonia graduate. For more details about our club, feel free to ask! Garden Club Scholarship Recipients

GARDEN CLUB PLANTS BULBS

Wilber Garden Club members Sylvia Girmus, Mavis Houser, Gladys Janda and Vlasta Sasek met at Dvoracek Memorial Library on Saturday, October 28. They planted spring bulbs in two squares on each side of the entrance sidewalk. In the spring they will plant more flowers.

The Wilber City Council discussed a potential dog waste station add-on to the Wilber lake area from the Wilber Garden Club. Questions about who would continually provide maintenance ensued, and no further action was taken until that can be decided.

WILBER GARDEN CLUB

The Wilber Garden Club met on Thursday, October 7 at the Museum. 10 members responded to roll call by telling of a special memory of the first home they could remember. The group signed a card for Sylvia Girmus at the Care Center. The birthday song was sung for Norma Ripa. Dorothy Kovar reported that Marge Kalkwarf invited the club to her home to see her flower garden. Shirley Korinek presented the lesson by reviewing the book, “Comfort for the Burned and Wounded,” written by John Keim. The list of plants included in the healing were: plantain leaves, burdock leaves, aloe vera, alfalfa sprouts, grape leaves, clay, grated potatoes and much more. Ellen Vlasak was hostess and Evelyn Stehlik won the door prize. The next meeting will be on November 4 with Twila Wanek presented the program and Jo Brickner will be the hostess.

GARDEN CLUB STUDIES WINDOW GARDEN

Lula Schleis presided at the Wilber Garden Club meeting on Wednesday, October 6 at the American Legion Hall. 31 members answered roll call on “Something new, planted or sowed.” Lesson on Gloxinia for window gardens was given by Anna Machacek. Quiz on geraniums, poinsettias and magnolias was given by Josephine Dhooge and Elizabeth Mashek. The officers table was appointed with golden cosmos. Hostesses were Belle Kresl, Mary Nerud and Rose Orash. Door prize was won by Emma Kohel.

Garden Club members Helen and Shirley attended the York Czech Festival today.

Two of Helen’s granddaughters, Natasha and Marissa, were recognized as being past York Czech Queens and great-granddaughter Ayla was crowned the York Czech Princess for 2025-26.

On October 14, Garden Club members, spouses and friends attended a pot-luck meal at Sokol Hall in honor of the club’s 98th anniversary.

Games of 10 Questions and Bingo were enjoyed by the members and guests and the Brad Husak Trio provided some music.

The event was enjoyed by all who attended!

RITES HERE OCTOBER 16 FOR MAMIE SMITH

Funeral services for Mary Bozena “Mamie” Smith, 85, who passed away at her home in Wilber on Monday, October 13 will be held at Zajicek Funeral Home today (October 16) at 2:00 pm. She was born on April 7, 1890 in Wilber, Nebraska to Joseph William and Bozena Marie “Bessie” (Aksamit) Sindelar. She married Anton Smith in 1910 and to this union five children were born: Edward, Milo, Irene, Wilson and Ellsworth. Mamie was a member of the Wilber Garden Club, TJ Sokols, Lutheran Social Hour, American Legion Auxiliary and Happy Hour Club. She is survived by her children, Irene Ripa (husband Irvin) of Wilber, Wilson Smith (wife Nora) of Seattle, Washington, and Ellsworth Smith of Fort Collins, Colorado; daughter-in-law Pauline Smith of Bartlesville, Oklahoma; seven grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; sister Stella Smith of Crete and Laura Simecek of Lincoln; and many nieces, nephews and other relatives. She was preceded in death by her parents in 1956 and 1950; husband Anton on November 30, 1945; sons Edward Smith and Milo Smith; sisters Bertha Janecek (husband Edward) and Ludmila Kudlacek (husband Arnold); brothers Vaclav Sindelar and Arnold Sindelar; nieces Dorothy Kudlacek and Harriet Kudlacek; nephews Arnold Janecek, Edward Janecek Jr., Richard Shestak and Harrison Simecek; and grandniece Kay Kudlacek. Pastor Mirowski will officiate at the services. Interment will be at Wilber Czech Cemetery near Wilber.

Rose Kohel atteded the annual fall Garden Club covered-dish dinner held at the Pythian Hall on Sunday afternoon.

GARDEN CLUB HOLDS ANNUAL PICNIC

The annual Wilber Garden Club picnic was held at the Pythian Hall on Sunday, October 12, with a covered-dish dinner for the members and their spouses and friends. About 40 were in attendance. Two guests- Pauline Homolka of Wilber and Joan Vlasin of Lincoln- were present. Homolka presented a travelogue on Hawaii. Bingo was played. A late lunch was served.

WILBER GARDEN CLUB

The Wilber Garden Club members met at the Sokol Hall on October 7 with President Blanche Hronik presiding. The meeting was opened by giving the pledge to the flag, the club prayer and creed in unison. 33 members answered roll call by telling some Halloween pranks of long ago. Estella Vlcek gave a report on the annual picnic held on September 27 in the Czech Museum basement. Elizabeth Mashek reported on the Flower Show and distributed tulip bulbs to the winners and runner-ups. Alice Lisec read an article on how to force hyacinths to bloom for Christmas. Helen Kupka brought articles needed in arranging flowers explaining each step. She brought a lovely arrangement using a variety of flowers and also some magnolia seeds to share with the members. The members of the club expressed their deepest sympathy to their member, Hattie Thompson, for the loss of her husband. Hostesses for the meeting were Libbie Chrastil, Mary Kalal, Helene Steinacher and Emily Zajicek. Erma Aksamit won the door prize.
