Fun fact: Indigenous people have been practicing STEM for thousands of years!

For example, Native American engineers built complex irrigation systems in the arid Southwest, like the Hohokam canals in present-day Arizona, some of which are still in use today.

These systems show a deep understanding of hydrology, engineering, and environmental science, long before modern STEM fields were formalized.

📰🗞STEM News from Science Daily:
“Washington State University researchers have used artificial intelligence to identify a faster and less costly way to 3D print a high-performance metal alloy, avoiding the need to manually test more than 100 million possible printing configurations.

The advance could eventually make the alloy, which is widely used in aerospace applications and may have uses in other industries, printable on more common commercial equipment. The AI strategy developed by the team could also be useful for other scientific problems involving enormous numbers of possible experiments, including drug discovery.

Researchers from WSU's School of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science and the School of Mechanical and Materials Engineering published the work in the Proceedings of the AAAI Conference on Artificial Intelligence. The project also received the Innovative Deployed Application Award at the organization's annual conference.

"Ninety percent of commercial printers cannot print this metal alloy, so given that we were able to find these feasible process parameters, it allows us to use those commercial printers, and we are essentially democratizing the printing of this alloy," said Jana Doppa, Huie-Rogers Endowed Chair Professor of Computer Science and Berry Distinguished Professor in Engineering who led the research.”

🛠 According to the U.S. Department of Labor, either the machinist Matthew Maguire or the carpenter Peter McGuire had the idea to set aside a day to honor labor over 140 years ago. However, the general consensus has traditionally leaned towards Peter McGuire. 🔧⚙️

👷‍♂️ Other accomplishments of McGuire’s include helping organize the convention of various carpenters' unions that formed the United Brotherhood of Carpenters and Joiners of America on August 8, 1881.

🔨 The organization had several goals: to improve carpenters’ working conditions by protecting the craft from the incursions on their work made by new woodworking machinery that threatened to displace their job of making doors, sashes, and other planned elements. Another goal of theirs was to prevent the debasing of their craft by subcontracting, piece rates, and other practices that divided the carpenter's work into smaller, less skilled functions.

📐 The Carpenters Union proposed to do this by controlling the labor supply, organizing the entire industry, and excluding non-union contractors from the market.

🤝 McGuire’s passion for his field went hand in hand with his passion for his rights.

👷‍♀️ This year, let's be inspired to embody that same spirit of courage in all our endeavors.
