Today’s ICT Launchpad leadership session at Mueller Elementary brought baseball history and real-life leadership into the gym.

Luis “Squeegee” Castillo shared lessons from his years around the New York Yankees about education, preparation, teamwork, resilience, and the importance of being someone others can depend on. He also shared the story of helping David Cone stay loose during the rain delay of Cone’s 1999 perfect game and what he learned from being around Derek Jeter and the Yankees.

Then the students put the lesson into action: one pitch, one swing, and a reminder that even great hitters do not succeed every time. You practice. You adjust. You get back up. You keep taking your swings.

Congratulations to our farthest-hit winners, who received Pinstripe Mania New York Yankees memorabilia figures.

Thank you, Squeegee, for investing in our students—and thank you, Ms. Beth, for helping make today possible.

Sometimes the lesson isn’t “learn something new.” Sometimes it’s “recognize what’s already there.”

This week at Mueller Leadership, we used the Scarecrow from The Wiz to talk about confidence, self-belief, and leadership. The Scarecrow believes he needs a brain — even while he’s already thinking, solving problems, and helping his friends move forward.

That gave us a simple question for the students: What strengths might you already have that you haven’t learned to trust yet?

Then they turned the lesson into art. Their scarecrow drawings became part creativity, part reflection, and a lot of personality.

A little film-history bonus: AFI records The Wiz (1978) as Michael Jackson’s theatrical film debut.

A special thank-you to Mr. and Mrs. Cocca for their contribution and support. Community support gives young people more room to think, create, practice, and grow.

We’re also carrying the scarecrow theme forward at BOOtanica, where our youth will help decorate a life-sized scarecrow for Botanica’s Scarecrow Row Competition.

Something special is growing at Mueller. ICT Launchpad is entering our fourth year working with Mueller students, and these photos capture what this work is really about: young people practicing leadership—not just hearing about it.

Most Tuesdays during the school year, our sessions bring together leadership, teamwork, healthy choices, writing, creativity and hands-on learning. Last year, students became healthy-food critics. This year, we're expanding into digital storytelling and creation with microphones, tablets, video and other tools that help students see themselves as leaders, creators and problem-solvers.

The circle around Mueller is growing too. In our latest collaboration meeting, Mueller Elementary, Wichita Public Schools Foundation , Wichita State Connect, the Greater Wichita YMCA, Airbus, and Boeing in Wichita explored ways to connect students and families with STEM, campus experiences, mentoring, enrichment and stronger support for teachers and families.

The goal isn't to simply tell children what they can become. It's to give them exposure, experiences, relationships and access that expand what they believe is possible.

When schools, nonprofits, businesses, universities, families and neighbors work together, we build an ecosystem around our children.

Helping Launch Youth Into The Orbit Of Success! 🚀

On the final day of Leadership at Mueller, each student walked away with a symbolic Launchpad Leadership Survival Kit — a small bag filled with reminders of the lessons we worked on throughout the school year.

Each item represented a leadership principle: self-discipline, teamwork, confidence, kindness, healthy choices, emotional control, preparation, and the courage to keep growing.

Our hope is that the seeds planted and watered this year will continue to produce fruit in the lives of these students for years to come.

This work would not be possible without the continued support of Tawyna Glover and Jason Fair. Their care, commitment, and belief in the youth at Mueller are truly appreciated.

ICT Launchpad is grateful for the opportunity to pour into the next generation of leaders.

Keep launching. 🚀🚀🚀

This year’s Mueller Leadership Group focused on helping students connect leadership with daily choices — including healthy eating, teamwork, self-discipline, and confidence.

Through ICT Launchpad, our goal is to expose youth to tools, conversations, and experiences that help them grow into stronger leaders inside and outside the classroom.

Big thanks to Tawyna Glover and Jason Fair for all of their support!🚀🚀🚀
