League 42 has openings on Tuesdays and Thursdays for our Bright Lights program at the Rudd Center, 1212 E. 17th. This program uses IXL programming to help kids improve their reading and math skills, regardless of current skill level. Our instructors are top-notch. The sessions run from 4:30-5:45 with a brief snack time at the beginning. If you are interested in enrolling in the Tuesday-Thursday sessions, please reach out to [email protected] or to Riley Jaske at [email protected]. There is no cost for this program, which begins on Sept. 9 and runs through early-December.

We had a fantastic day on Saturday with the Wichita State Baseball Shockers at Eck Stadium. Their second annual skills clinic for League 42 players was a big hit with nearly 60 players in attendance. The Shockers made it a big deal and our kids had a blast. Thanks to WSU coach Brian Green, along with his assistant coaches and players, for a great morning. It wasn't even too hot when the sun hid behind a thin group of clouds for most of the morning.

Next up is our first-ever Friends University Athletics baseball clinic coming up on Saturday, Sept. 5, from 10 a.m. until noon at the Friends facility at the Kansas Baseball Hall of Fame complex on McLean between Seneca and Meridian. We're really looking forward to this one. Please pre-register if you haven't already by emailing [email protected]. If you plan on enrolling your child or children in League 42 for the 2027 season, they are eligible to attend these clinics. If you pre-register, please make sure your kids attend the clinic.

We can’t wait for tomorrow’s skills clinic with the Wichita State Shockers baseball team, led by Head Coach Brian Green. He, his staff, and his players put a lot into this and our League 42 players are the beneficiaries. The free clinic is from 10 a.m. until noon at Eck Stadium. The entrance at the third-base gate opens at 9:30 and we suggest arriving as close to that time as possible. It’s gonna be a great day.

Some dates to remember as we get pretty busy in September:

These are the dates to jot down as we start to get busier with clinics, planning, etc. You can reserve a spot in any or all of these clinics by sending an email to [email protected].

Saturday, Aug. 29 - Skills clinic with the Wichita State baseball team, 10 a.m. until noon, Eck Stadium.

Saturday, Sept. 5 - Skills clinic with the Friends University baseball team, 10 a.m. until noon, West Side Athletic Field on McLean between Meridian and Seneca.

Saturday, Sept. 12 - Pitching clinic with instructors at the Leslie Rudd Learning Center, 10 a.m. until 11:30.

Saturday, Sept. 19 - Hitting clinic with Mark McBratney and his coaches on the big fields at McAdams Park, 10 a.m. until 11:30.

Sunday, Sept. 27 - Skills clinic with Tabor University baseball team, 2-4 p.m., McAdams Park fields.

Tuesday, Sept. 8 - Bright Lights fall semester begins at the Rudd Center, Monday-Thursday, 4:30-5:45 p.m. We need students particularly for our Tuesday-Thursday sessions. And we still need a few for our Monday-Wednesday sessions. Pre-register by contacting Riley Jaske ([email protected]) or Bob Lutz ([email protected]). There is no charge and our education staff does a great job helping children read better, regardless of their reading level.

Saturday, Sept. 26 - Registration for the 2027 season, returning families only, 9 a.m. until 1 p.m. at the Rudd Center, 1212 E. 17th. If you know of a new family willing to provide coaching (either as a head coach or assistant), we will allow that family to enroll with our returning families.

Saturday, Oct. 3 - Registration for returning families only, unless a new family is willing to provide a head or assistant coach. 9 a.m. until 1 p.m. at the Rudd Center.

Saturday, Oct. 10 - Registration for all families, returning and new, 9 a.m. until 1 p.m. at the Rudd Center.

The cost for enrollment is still only $30 per child or family of siblings. However, if you enroll more than one child, please know that we have a strict age-group policy. If you want your players to be on the same team, they have to be in the same age group. And we strongly request strong attendance, so if you have multiple children please understand that we do expect them to be at practices and games even when there are conflicts.

Have you been following the Little League World Series?

One of the big stories has been the performance of 12-year-old Kinley Rasmus for the Southeastern U.S. team from Phenix City, Ala., which plays this afternoon in an elimination game.

Kinley is a girl. And she's been one of the best players in the tournament so far. She is the 26th girl to compete in the LLWS and has tied the strikeouts record for girls with 14, which was previously set by Mo'ne Davis in 2014.

I love this story. Rasmus's father and uncle both played in the big leagues.

Of course, League 42 has had many girls play over our 13 seasons, and we love the nature of our organization. League 42 and baseball are a great training ground for boys and girls and we have had excellent female players over the years. We're proud of Kinley Rasmus and of all the girls who play baseball in League 42 and everywhere else they are given the opportunity.

A couple more announcements about upcoming skills clinics for League 42 players, in addition to the Wichita State Baseball clinic on Saturday, Aug. 29, from 10 a.m. until noon at Eck Stadium. By the way, we still have room in this one, so send me an e-mail ([email protected]) to reserve a spot or spots.

We'll also be doing our first-ever clinic with the Friends University Baseball team on Saturday, Sept. 5, from 10 a.m. until noon at the Friends field, which is located inside the Kansas Baseball Hall of Fame complex on McLean between Seneca and Meridian. Thanks to Falcons head coach Adam Neisius for making this one happen and we're excited to be with the Falcons.

Then, on Sunday, Sept. 27, we'll have our 14th annual skills clinic with Tabor College Baseball on our two biggest fields at historic McAdams Park from 2-4 p.m. Tabor and head coach Mark Standiford have been doing this from the very first year of League 42 and it means a lot to us.

Stay tuned as we're working on putting together pitching and hitting clinics for the other two weekends in September.

A reminder that we will have a baseball skills clinic with Wichita State Baseball on Saturday, Aug. 29, from 10 a.m. until noon at Eck Stadium. We're needing a couple of dozen more players, at least, to reserve spots for this great opportunity with the Shockers. You can guarantee your player(s) a spot by simply sending an e-mail to me at [email protected]. We want to show up strong for this one, which will include every WSU baseball player and member of the coaching staff.

We're excited that Wichita State Baseball will be holding another League 42 exclusive skills clinic on Saturday, Aug. 29, from 10 a.m. until noon at Eck Stadium on the WSU campus for ages 7 through 14. This was a big hit last year and we expect another strong turnout. If you are a L42 player from 2026 who did not graduate from our league as a 14-year-old, you are eligible to attend this clinic. To reserve a spot, please send an e-mail to [email protected]

Also, we will be doing enrollment for the 2027 season soon. Here's the schedule as we anticipate busy registration days.

Saturday, Sept. 26 - 9 a.m. until 1 p.m. at the Rudd Center (returning families only)

Saturday, Oct. 3 - 9 a.m. until 1 p.m. at the Rudd Center (returning families only)

Saturday, Oct. 10 - 9 a.m. until 1 p.m. (all families)

We anticipate that our league will fill during these three registration days. If it does not, we will add another registration date on Oct. 17. Best advice is to take care of registration early. We are keeping the cost at $30 per child or family of siblings but stress the importance of attendance and please keep that in mind as you consider how many children you plan to enroll. We will accept children ages 5 through 14 as of May 1, 2027.

STEAM Week for League 42's Bright Lights is fast approaching and we're lining up some great speakers for the week. Please consider getting your kids involved.

August is HERE and we couldn't be more excited for STEAM! We hope to see League 42 players during STEAM week, August 17th-20th! To register, email [email protected] with your child's name, age, grade, and any food allergies.

STEAM SPEAKER SPOTLIGHT:

Miranda Konowitz is the Chief Engineer of Special Missions at Textron Aviation, where she leads the organization responsible for modifying aircraft and supporting customers with unique operations. She has been with Textron Aviation for 13 years and earned an Aerospace Engineering degree from the University of Oklahoma and an MBA from the University of Kansas. Outside of work, she likes to be outside - playing golf, enjoying her garden, and coaching League 42 T-ball!

Activity: Students will become junior aerospace engineers as they build their very own glider aircraft! Along the way, they'll discover the parts of an airplane, explore the basic physics of flight, and learn how engineers design and build flying vehicles.

A reminder about our annual Kickapalooza event tomorrow morning at McAdams with area law enforcement personnel and first responders. This is always a lot of fun and we're thankful to the Wichita Metro Crime Commission for making this happen. It's from 9:30 until around 11:15-11:30 and we'll be serving pizza after about an hour or so of kickball. If you have sent an e-mail reserving a spot, you're set. We are full and we'll see some of you tomorrow at this Bats and Badges event.
