IAM District 70 members brought their voices to Capitol Hill this week as part of the IAM Legislative Conference in Washington, D.C.

Standing shoulder to shoulder with IAM members from across North America, our delegation met with elected officials and advocated for policies that protect good union jobs, strengthen collective bargaining rights, support retirement security, and invest in America's workforce.

The message was clear: Working people built this country, and working people deserve a seat at the table.

From the halls of Congress to the Senate hearing rooms, District 70 members proudly represented Wichita, Kansas, and the values of solidarity, unity, and worker power.

When IAM members speak with one voice, lawmakers listen.

Honoring Juneteenth: Freedom, Dignity and Equality

Juneteenth, observed each year on June 19, commemorates the day in 1865 when enslaved African Americans in Galveston, Texas, finally learned they were free, more than two years after the Emancipation Proclamation was signed. It marks a significant milestone in American history and stands as a celebration of freedom and human dignity.

Juneteenth also holds deep meaning within the labor movement. The struggle for freedom and the struggle for workers' rights have long been connected. Enslaved people were denied not only their freedom but also the right to benefit from their own labor. The end of slavery represented a critical step toward ensuring that all workers could seek fair treatment, safe working conditions, and the opportunity to earn a living through their work.

Throughout history, African American workers have played a vital role in strengthening unions and advancing workplace protections. Their efforts have helped expand opportunities, improve wages, and secure rights that benefit working people across all industries.

As we celebrate Juneteenth, we honor those who fought for freedom and recognize the ongoing importance of solidarity in the workplace and our communities. The labor movement's commitment to fairness, equality, and respect for all workers reflects the enduring spirit of Juneteenth and the belief that every worker deserves dignity, opportunity, and a voice on the job.

IAM Member Spotlight: Brother Kurt Holtz

For nearly five decades, Brother Kurt Holtz has exemplified what it means to be a dedicated union member, leader, and advocate for working people. A proud member of the International Association of Machinists in good standing since February 1978, Brother Holtz has devoted much of his life to strengthening the labor movement and serving his fellow members.

Throughout his distinguished tenure with the IAM, Brother Holtz has held numerous leadership positions, earning the respect and admiration of members across the organization. His commitment to service began as a Shop Steward, where he worked directly with members to protect workplace rights, address concerns, and ensure the collective bargaining agreement was upheld.

Brother Holtz also served as Conductor Sentinel of IAM Local 733, helping maintain the traditions and order of the local while fostering member engagement and participation. His leadership abilities soon led him to the position of President of Local 733, where he guided the lodge through important challenges and opportunities while advocating for the needs of the membership.

Following the merger of Local 733 into Local 774, Brother Holtz continued his service as Vice President of Local 774. In this role, he remained committed to advancing the interests of working families and strengthening solidarity among members. His dedication and proven leadership eventually led him to serve as Vice President of IAM District 70, where he helped support locals throughout the district and worked to advance the mission of the IAM on a broader scale.

Over the course of his 48 years of membership, Brother Holtz has witnessed significant changes within the labor movement and the industries represented by the IAM. Through it all, he has remained steadfast in his belief that collective action, solidarity, and member involvement are the foundation of a strong union.

Brother Holtz's legacy is reflected not only in the offices he has held, but also in the countless members he has mentored, represented, and inspired throughout his years of service. His dedication serves as an example for current and future generations of IAM members who continue the fight for fairness, dignity, and respect in the workplace.

IAM District 70 is proud to recognize Brother Kurt Holtz for his decades of service, leadership, and unwavering commitment to the membership. His contributions have helped strengthen our union and leave a lasting impact on IAM members throughout District 70 and beyond.
