It's Black Maternal Health Week and we want to highlight a truth: Black Maternal Health Week is not only about what happens in hospitals and clinics. It is also about whether Black families actually have the material support they need to survive, recover, and care for themselves and their children with dignity.
That is part of why Liberation Place exists.
Liberation Place is a mutual aid project of Kansas Birth Justice Society, a Black and Brown-led nonprofit focused on birth justice, maternal and infant health equity, and building community-rooted systems of support for families in Kansas. Our work at Liberation Place is grounded in the long tradition of mutual aid modeled by the Black Panthers and generations of our ancestors and changemakers who came before us. They, and we, correctly understand that when systems fail our people, we must build what our communities need. No barriers. No questions. No surveillance. Just solutions.
If you believe in this work, we invite you to be part of it. Volunteer with us. Donate supplies. Give financially if you are able. Community care is only possible because people choose to show up for one another.
This week and every week, Liberation Place is part of that work.
