Founded in the summer of 1968 as the Black Arts Festival, its original purpose was to provide a large social outlet for Black families to enjoy the renderings of local artists, and to detract from the civil unrest occurring both locally and nationally. Through the efforts of the many volunteers since its inception, it has evolved into the Wichita Black Arts Festival Association (WBAFA), a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization.
