Update:
After 4.5 hours of not being available, Fleet maintenance was able to repair the engine and it will be back into service shortly.
The city is still out of reserves and our hope is we do not have another breakdown.
We will keep you informed.
Citizen Information:
For residents and those who work in the area from 15th Street North to Lincoln, between Cleveland and Oliver, including Wesley Medical Center, Hilltop, and College Hill. There is currently not a fully operational fire engine assigned to cover this district.
The Wichita Fire Department has exhausted its reserve fleet due to an unprecedented number of apparatus out of service for repairs. At this time, 7 frontline fire engines, 2 trucks, and 1 ladder truck are down for repair, leaving the department without available reserve engines to place into service.
As a temporary measure, a smaller pickup style truck response unit without onboard water capability has been deployed to the area.
This creates a serious public safety concern in the event of a working fire or other major emergency within this district. Please know that Wichita firefighters remain committed to serving the community and will continue to do everything possible to respond quickly and effectively to all emergencies. This will slow our first due fire truck response in this area as one responds from an outside answering district.
We will continue to keep the public updated as more information becomes available.
