Who keeps Wichita running when the alarm sounds at 2 a.m.?

Members of the Kansas State Council of Firefighters do and I had a chance to speak at their conference hosted by Wichita Firefighters - IAFF LOCAL 135

As someone who has proudly earned the support of firefighters, I believe strong communities are built by supporting the workers who serve them. Firefighters and their union play an important role in advocating for safe staffing, proper equipment, and the resources needed to protect both first responders and the public.

I’ll always support the men and women who answer the call, protect our neighborhoods, and keep Wichita safe. Thank you to the firefighters from across Kansas for your service, sacrifice, and commitment to our communities.

I was honored to be asked to speak at the 80th Kansas State Council of Firefighters Conference and share the work we've done launching a Wichita Fire Department health and cancer screening initiative. The overall cancer detection rate among Wichita Firefighters screened stands at approximately 6%. Thank you to our program partners, including the City of Wichita- Government Human Resources Department, Kansas Health Foundation, Ascension Via Christi, Wichita Firefighters - IAFF LOCAL 135, and Beyond The Call.

Thank you Council Member Joseph Shepard for addressing the Kansas State Council. We were so glad you were able to join us.

On Friday, I spoke with firefighters from across Kansas. Thanks for having me, Wichita Firefighters - IAFF LOCAL 135.

I’ve gained a deeper appreciation for the sacrifice and dedication of our firefighters, and I shared what I believe Wichita must do to lead by example:

🔥Invest in firefighters’ and their families’ holistic health and well-being as a critical part of public safety.

🔥Use the search for our next Fire Chief to elevate the voices of those who serve every day. This decision should be informed by firefighters, not made solely from City Hall. I’ll be engaging members of the department to hear their perspectives.

🔥Address the root causes driving emergency calls. Medical calls remain the top reason firefighters are dispatched in District 1, which means investing in community health is also an investment in supporting our fire fighters.
