As firefighters, we use a lot of terminology that may not mean much to the citizens we serve. One of our goals is to help explain what we do, why we do it, and why training is so important.

So, what is a Mayday?

A Mayday is called on the fireground when something has happened that has endangered,or could endanger the life of one or more firefighters.

A building collapse.
A sudden explosion.
A firefighter becoming trapped, lost, injured, or running out of air.

When a Mayday is called, everything changes. Firefighters are specifically trained for these situations. They train on how to recognize and declare a Mayday, how to communicate the emergency, how to manage the incident, how to perform self-rescue, and how to locate and rescue a firefighter who is down or trapped.

Wichita firefighters have experienced Mayday situations. That experience makes our training even more important.

This is why the Wichita Fire Department Training Division is so critical. The skills firefighters practice in training aren’t just skills for a test or a checklist,they are skills that may one day be needed to save a firefighter’s life.

When a Mayday is called, there is no time to learn.

You rely on the training.
You rely on your crew.
You rely on the firefighter next to you.

Wichita firefighters developed a bundle that provides a quick and effective way to get a fire attack line to the door. What started here in Wichita has made its way throughout the U.S. fire service and has become a go-to method for attack line deployment.

Once again, Local 135 would like to welcome Chief Mire and his family to Wichita!

We are extremely excited to have him leading a dedicated and outstanding fire department.
