When we say, “fish migration”, what do you picture? A mass of salmon or steelhead fish moving in a great, seething train up a river somewhere along the coast? Well, we’re here to tell you that fish migrations aren’t just reserved for these large bodied coastal fish! 🐟🐟🐟

Fish migrations are important, seasonal movements of fish that are vital for many species. Usually an environmental cue, like temperature or photoperiods (i.e. longer days), signal fish that their spawning or breeding season has arrived and it’s time to move!

The journeys some fish species make during this period are quite spectacular given their small size. For example, the Arkansas River shiner (Notropis girardi), a small, streamlined minnow that has slowly disappeared from Kansas rivers, has been found to move upwards of 50 river miles! And studies that have tracked Blue Sucker (Cycleptus elongatus) have found these fish can migrate as far as 80 river miles in under 24 hours during their spawning season! Fish migrations are vital to maintain healthy fish populations and that is why river connectivity and healthy streams are so important.
