The establishment of a Kansas chapter of the Poor People’s Campaign started in the Fall of 2017 when Revs. Barber and Theoharis, came to Kansas for a founding retreat with 40 community leaders from around Kansas and held a mass meeting at 1st United Methodist Church in Topeka where a thousand people from around the State drove from as far as Frontenac in the southeast and Liberal in the southwest part of the State to show that Kansas was ready for a change. In the Summer of 2018, 50-years after the assassination of Martin Luther King, Jr., hundreds of Kansans from farmers to veterans, LGBTQ+ to Black and Latinx people joined together for 40-Days in the State Capital. Each Monday there was an action with rallies, street drama, testimonies and art that raised issues around wages, racism, poverty, militarism, and healthcare that culminated in 108 arrests. Laura supported leaders and held teams of volunteers together as they moved their voices into the public arena.
Stay tuned for what’s next.
